I want to dig out the crawl space and turn it into a basement but don't know how to build retaining walls.

It would be best to pour a concrete floor, and either pour a concrete wall, or lay concrete block. These skills are best left to professionals. I did this in my crawl space, and the extra space has proven to be money well spent.

Hi Mboyd. It can be done. However..........if your crawl space does not have retaining walls I say without a doubt: THIS IS NOT A DYI PROJECT! In order for this to happen, your home has to be secured from underneath by steel beams. Then excavated, water, sewer, electrical, etc. must be relocated then retaining walls poured or blocked up. A crawl space means your home is sitting on piling. It is expensive but will definitely be worth the money as stated above.

Hope is correct! IT IS NOT A DIY PROJECT!!! You are dealing with a structure that sits on walls and footings already. Just digging out the crawl could compromise the base of the existing walls, footings, and they can actually cave in. You are dealing with a project that requires engineering and professionals.

Understandably you want to save some money on this project - however, hire a professional who may hire you back for some of the menial labor work!! Take directions well put out the cash, get permits and get it done right - really....You will be safer, the house won't fall, and resale value will be higher. Get 3 quotes from professionals.
  • No 3 quotes required, nor steel beams - there are professional companies that undercut portions of the crawlspace and do what is called underpinning. When that is done they can finish off the rest. So why not 3 - well because in most areas of the country you will be lucky to find one or two companies with that experience & trust me experience counts more than some price ever will

I wouldn't even consider this a DIY project. You're dealing with the foundation of your home. Seek the work of a professional.

For me personally, I would buy a shed structure from Home Depot. They are mass produced so they are cost effective. You can modify anything once you get it delivered. Also, if you just need storage, they are great. If you want something like a She/He shed, you can get plans and instructions at diynetwork.com I'm glad you made the decision you did about a basement addition.
