Kitchen

Do you have any pros or cons to a kitchen island? Those that have one do you find it handy or is it just in the way? I have been thinking about taking out part of a long counter (that divides dining room from kitchen) and adding a kitchen island.

  • depends on the layout of the kitchen. But if it fits with the right clearances than I think you will find it very handy. There are a lot of pros to having work space right behind you wether at the fridge or the cooking surface.
  • There are no cons if you have space. I like 42" between cabinets for a walkway, but even that is just a recommendation.

I like a island but see too many over scaled for the space or need. lay out of kitchen is critical for function I recommend going over layout & scale times
  • As the rest of the posters stated this depends upon your space requirements. But remember a few things. If your planning to use this island for food prep etc, you need to fasten it down and not put it on wheels. An electrical outlet is required on all islands as well. You do not want to risk using a extension cord on appliances that people could trip on when walking by. To do this you will need to drill holes into the floor to run the wires. If the island does not work out and you want it gone, you will be dealing with wire holes when its removed.

Yes, I like the island, it provides the opportunity to share thoughts with others face to face, rather than having your back to them while preparing the meal...
