I only really like the placement of the buffet. Suggestions? Thoughts? I love the rug, but it doesn't look like right where it is or angled lengthwise in front of fireplace.

Love the decor but your right it doesn't look right. You might want to try turning the rug the other way. Moving the dresser behind the couch and the chairs to the wall where the dresser is. I usually move furniture around 100 times before it flows and feels right

Personally its the rug throwing off the dimension of the room. I would move everything around and then place the rug.
  • Trish Seenan Trish Seenan on May 01, 2016
Absolutely the rug. Should be placed lengthways and only partly under couch. Chairs away from windows. I would place at right angles and abutting couch - also front feet only on rug.

Agree on the rug. Would also try floating the buffet behind the sofa, it looks like it is sort of narrow and seems like it would work there. Also agree on moving the chairs over to the wall with a table between them.
    • Kristen Kristen on May 01, 2016
@Kathy Sijan The buffet is actually pretty large.... Maybe 6' L by 22"D

I agree with all the others. You have lovely furniture and it just needs tweaking now. One problem I notice is the split focal point with the lovely mirror. You might try putting the mirror over the fireplace and then a series of photos or prints over the buffet.

On the designer shows, they basically ignore that corner fireplace, and put furniture where it is functional and looks best. The fireplace is the culprit in making your room feel off kilter
  • Frances Mercado Frances Mercado on May 02, 2016
Try buffet in front of the Windows, couch where buffet was, float the chairs where couch was. This will make the room appear airy and not chop the room up. The space will seem larger, adjust the carpet to you liking.

Measure your room, measure your furniture and draw it out on graph paper. Then play with the arrangement on paper. Saves your back!

I would turn the couch to be parallel with the buffet, angling the rug in between. Then, have the single chairs perpendicular to the couch on either side. All this is based on you wanting to leave your buffet in the same location.

As others have said, I too would move the rug lengthwise and just put the front 2 legs of the couch on it. I would have the chairs flank the FP (but not pushed tightly against the wall...angled in), and put the buffet behind the couch. You could move the couch forward if need be for the depth of the buffet, and to prevent ''screaming distance'' with the 2 chairs.

P.S. I just saw a professionally decorated, draw home similar to yours...the sectional was placed where your couch is now (but shifted a bit to the left), and the chaise part in front of the window. It looked good.

Ms. Frances M. and Ms. Jemma shared my idea 's, and I would place the mirror over the fireplace. And add a painting or photo college over the couch. I would also add a third pop of color with flowers or decorative pillows.
    • Kristen Kristen on May 02, 2016
@Tamaraa The mirror is too big to fit over the fireplace, but I love the idea of photo collage over the sofa. Thanks!

First, what is the use of this room? Then, adjust the room for that. If it will be a multi-purpose room e.g. entertaining, reading or enjoying the fireplace. From the photo the couch appears to separate, does it? If it does, this would make a nice pit situation for multi-purpose. Lastly, I would also suggest one thing by choosing one contrasting color it causes your eyes to move around the room, creating unity and interest i.e. orange, red, blue, green for pillows, candles, frames, etc. This idea also depends on the use and look you are going for. Some designers like to add accents that have black and white in them i.e. picture frame. I have two little black and white geometric designed stackable boxes that I put underneath a console table. Also, the idea of putting the mirror over the fireplace gives you a focal point! Have fun with it and make it your own! Julia

Funny you say that. I had a similar situation and ended up using the mirror in our bathroom. Just go with it. Like @lynsey said she has to move things around ... Though I suggest getting sliders (it saves your back and floors). Too bad we are not neighbors because I would love to help you. I'm in design school and we do things on the computer. It's convenient yet not very personal. You have a lovely palette to work with. What you have done isn't bad it just doesn't flow. In feng shui it's not good to have your back to openness. Do a google search for images "feng shui living room furniture positioning." And please let us know how it turns out! Best regards, Julia

I would suggest switching the rug w/the longer length only part way under neath the sofa . Let one white chair almost touch the sofa arm on the left end . Use the second white chair else where if you don't feel like you have the room for a walk way. There are a lot of angles you are dealing with and they need to be minimized. Most furniture should touch the rug if only minimally but that is totally up to you. Use some tan along w/the pillows you have to soften it a bit and don't forget a throw and possibly a pop of a different color in art or floral. I usually move furniture around several time until I feel like it has a home. Good luck! :)

I love your furniture and I can understand why you are having a difficult time. I would place the rug length wise in front of the fire place. Then I would move the couch where the chairs are , but bring it in some and I would move the chairs to the opposite side that way you have room for a little coffee table and side table with a lamp and a side table between the two chairs. Your mirror really doesn't look to big to go over the fireplace, it would be perfect there, have you tried just resting it on the mantle to see how it looks. I love your taste and I'm sure it will come together for you. Another thing you could do is place the rug length wise in front of the fire place leave the couch where it is and move one of the chairs to the other side of the fire place moving both of them in some. Good luck, would love to see after pictures.

@patty That is one arrangement I have not tried yet - thank you so much!!!! we initially tried the mirror about the fireplace and it is too big. :(

Put the buffet across the back of the couch and move one of the chairs to the other side of the fireplace. You may even find you can turn the rug 90 degrees now.

@Jo Fletcher Thanks so much! The buffet is probably too big (6'L x 2'D) to put behind the sofa, but I like the idea of moving the chairs and rug around...
  • Patty Patty on May 02, 2016
You can find a nice piece of art for the fire place and your beautiful mirror looks great right where it is. You will eventually figure out what is best for your needs and what you both like best. Good luck

I personally like the buffet as is, but have you thought of putting it behind the sofa?
    • Kristen Kristen on May 03, 2016
@Polly Zieper A few people mentioned that, but it is pretty large - 72"L x 22"D... think maybe a narrow console would work better.

At an appointment today, I saw the February 2016 of Canadian House & Home magazine. In a design dilemma section, Les Ensembliers designers were posed the same question. The room looks very similar to yours. They put the sofa or loveseat where your buffet is, and 2 chairs perpendicular to the sofa's right arm...so picture an L (facing the FP). Then by the left of the window, they angled in a club chair with a small table. I also like this: http://www.houzz.com/photos/3868571/Twin-Rivers-traditional-living-room-other-metro

@Antrubberplant oh I like the feel of that room.. but we have a sectional and not too separate sofas. :(
  • Polly Zieper Polly Zieper on May 11, 2016
Kristen, good point, and on looking today I noticed how thick your area rug isso behind the sofa wouldn't work.
  • Sandra Sandra on May 13, 2016
Kristen, the room that Antrubberplant showed you would work even with your sectional. Simply put the sectional on one side and an end table between the chairs on the opposite side. not sure,if,you have room for a small coffee table. If so, it should be some sort of glass table so that it it keeps the room with a lighter feeling. As a matter of fact the table between the chairs could be glass as well. Another advantage is no glass rings on your wood. Lol. But I think ifmyoumputmthatmrug in the middle of the room with the chairs pulled out from the wall and the sectional on the opposite side you will see your room come together. And, you could indeed add a painting over the fireplace and over the buffet. And, some nice lamps would be nice. On the table between the chairs and a couple of some sort of candle stick lamps on the buffet. Some photo of your family on top of the buffet would be nice. One way to warm up that room would be the photos and lamp light in the evening.
