Please help us select a color for our front door.

Question

Our wood grained fiberglass front door must be refinished. We have decided to add color instead of re-staining. The front of house faces the sun in the morning and is in the shade during the afternoon. The door area is lit during the evening. Note: the camera exaggerated the heat blocking aspect of the front window. The eye does not see the green tint.
What door color would you suggest?

Personally against your brick color house I can vision a rusty reddish color. I googled images of front door colors which gave me the ideas. The yellowish gold color to me looked nice as well. However this is truly ones own taste.

Definitely a darker color.. it would be great if you added some shutters to the windows . Would add to curb appeal.. they have some great inexpensive  ways on hometalk to make shutters.

I would go with an accent color to make the door pop and give curb appeal. A dark green (suggested above is a great idea) or dark blue, red or chocolate. Go with a color you like as you may not do this again for a couple of years. Get swatches from a local paint store and be sure to get an outdoor paint that can handle the weather in your area. All great color choice suggestions here. You have a tough decision! Get some solid colored wrapping paper or party table cloths of each color (dollar store) and drape the door with each one to see what appeals to you. Adding shutters of the same color to the windows would tie everything together otherwise the door color may overpower the look of the house.

You have a very traditional style home. I would use a classic looking color as to not have to do it again. While you are doing this... update your hardware on the door. I would suggest either a deep red or green with polished nickel hardware! Good luck! I will be doing my own door later this year!

I would go with a darker color than your blinds. I like red but it might clash with those blinds showing..

It is always best to purchase color samples to see what works the best in your home. They now sell long sheets of paper to use instead of painting the actual surface.This way you can hold various colors up and see what you like the best.

Do you want to go lighter or darker with the door? Since your house is more on the traditional side, have you considered black? Or if that's too dark, what about an olive green? While the satin nickle is nice, there may not be enough contrast between the fixture and the door surround - have you considered brass?

can't go wrong with a nice navy. If you like something on the lighter side, maybe Ben Moore 'VanDeusen blue' or try 'Old Navy', 'Symphony Blue' or'Hale Navy', which is actually more of a gray tone. Look at some of the blues online and see what you like. Modern Masters just came out with FrontDoor paint in a plastic jar, all ready to go. They have about 25 shades. You can check out those as well. Since that is a fiberglass door, sand it a bit, wipe clean, and maybe spray an oil base primer (Zinsser has one in a can that's easy) and give it one final fine, quick sanding and wipe before painting. The paint will look better. Also choose a glossy enamel as that wears better (obviously choose exterior). 
 And in no way will a blue door compete w/the house. Blue would be a complimentary color to the brick. It would go perfectly.

What is your favorite color? You could go with just about any color! Do you want the door to blend in with the house? or do you want someone to drive by and say 'wow'? i would go with a teal, navy, or even a dark gray. I used Behr Marquee last fall on my door it is torch red which is really burnt orange. This paint is awesome (and I have used a ton of paint in my lifetime)

My first choice would be a light turquoise, 2. Bright red, 3. Green. They all stand out to give your home a little more curb appeal and from the photo, would accent the house. Seems like HGTV has something online to help decide door color?? I know every issue of their magazine features a door of the month.

My front door was re-painted in 2013 to a high gloss Benjamin Moore, Cote De Azur, rather like a medium turquoise which stands out against the yellow house and slightly darker shutters. I get many compliments, even from joggers just passing by. Pick your favorite color, like in western Europe, the front door does not need to coordinate or match the house.
