Please help us select a color for our front door.

Our wood grained fiberglass front door must be refinished. We have decided to add color instead of re-staining. The front of house faces the sun in the morning and is in the shade during the afternoon. The door area is lit during the evening. Note: the camera exaggerated the heat blocking aspect of the front window. The eye does not see the green tint.
What door color would you suggest?

Personally against your brick color house I can vision a rusty reddish color. I googled images of front door colors which gave me the ideas. The yellowish gold color to me looked nice as well. However this is truly ones own taste.

I think a robin's egg blue and with the green (shade?) in the window, it looks fresh.
    • Lou Lou on May 04, 2016
I just added a note about the window. My Nikon camera exaggerated the heat blocking aspect of the front window. The eye does not see the green tint.

    Dark Green, Forrest Green
  • Brenda Brenda on May 04, 2016
I would go with red. I love a bold color on a front door. Good Luck!

Orange. I have a cedar & brick house & I painted my door orange. Love it. Even looks good w/my Christmas decorations.
  • Definitely a darker color.. it would be great if you added some shutters to the windows . Would add to curb appeal.. they have some great inexpensive ways on hometalk to make shutters.

Bright sunshiny lemon yellow, that is what I have on mine, it makes me happy on a dreary winter day.
  • Cookie Owens Cookie Owens on May 04, 2016
I would go with an accent color to make the door pop and give curb appeal. A dark green (suggested above is a great idea) or dark blue, red or chocolate. Go with a color you like as you may not do this again for a couple of years. Get swatches from a local paint store and be sure to get an outdoor paint that can handle the weather in your area. Hope this helps!

    red
  • Ali Kay Ali Kay on May 04, 2016
I think this patina would look great!! It has been a trendy color and I have seen a few other doors in this color.
  • MlrNV57 MlrNV57 on May 04, 2016
Another thought, have you checked out Unicorn Spit? You could do something outrageous using that.
  • William William on May 04, 2016
All great color choice suggestions here. You have a tough decision! Get some solid colored wrapping paper or party table cloths of each color (dollar store) and drape the door with each one to see what appeals to you. Adding shutters of the same color to the windows would tie everything together otherwise the door color may overpower the look of the house.

You have a very traditional style home. I would use a classic looking color as to not have to do it again. While you are doing this... update your hardware on the door. I would suggest either a deep red or green with polished nickel hardware! Good luck! I will be doing my own door later this year!
    • Lou Lou on May 04, 2016
Thank You Liz Townley, we plan to change the hardware to nickel.
  • Liz Townley Liz Townley on May 04, 2016
Also, update your sconces to match a more updated, but classic look. I like the house numbers!!!

That sconce is attractive and I like the finish the satin finish would coordinate well with new satin finished door hardware. Thank you.

I would go with a darker color than your blinds. I like red but it might clash with those blinds showing..
    • Lou Lou on May 04, 2016
The interior blinds are white. My camera picked up the heat shielding of our high efficiency window. The glass looks clear to the eye. Thank you. Also, in the shade my Nikon shows the glass as clear. Weird, yes!
  • Janet Pizaro Janet Pizaro on May 04, 2016
It is always best to purchase color samples to see what works the best in your home. They now sell long sheets of paper to use instead of painting the actual surface. This way you can hold various colors up and see what you like the best.
  • Carol Mckeown Carol Mckeown on May 04, 2016
Oh, ok. Still liking blue. :-)
  • M M on May 04, 2016
Do you want to go lighter or darker with the door? Since your house is more on the traditional side, have you considered black? Or if that's too dark, what about an olive green? While the satin nickle is nice, there may not be enough contrast between the fixture and the door surround - have you considered brass?
  • Lou Lou on May 04, 2016
Ladies, is there a shade of blue that would be acceptable or Janet what would best coordinate with the brick? Thank you both.
  • can't go wrong with a nice navy. If you like something on the lighter side, maybe Ben Moore 'VanDeusen blue' or try 'Old Navy', 'Symphony Blue' or'Hale Navy", which is actually more of a gray tone. Look at some of the blues online and see what you like. Modern Masters just came out with FrontDoor paint in a plastic jar, all ready to go. They have about 25 shades. You can check out those as well. Since that is a fiberglass door, sand it a bit, wipe clean, and maybe spray an oil base primer (Zinsser has one in a can that's easy) and give it one final fine, quick sanding and wipe before painting. The paint will look better. Also choose a glossy enamel as that wears better (obviously choose exterior). And in no way will a blue door compete w/the house. Blue would be a complimentary color to the brick. It would go perfectly.
  • Momama Momama on May 04, 2016
Reddish brown brick color. Also either paint the back of the green blinds white or off-white. A pop of color certainly would look nice!!
  • Shani Shani on May 04, 2016
Burgundy would look beautiful or a dark grey, and plant some red roses to match
  • What is your favorite color? You could go with just about any color! Do you want the door to blend in with the house? or do you want someone to drive by and say 'wow'? i would go with a teal, navy, or even a dark gray. I used Behr Marquee last fall on my door it is torch red which is really burnt orange. This paint is awesome (and I have used a ton of paint in my lifetime)

Just painted mine turquoise, I love this color
  • Kathy Lovenburg Kathy Lovenburg on May 05, 2016
My first choice would be a light turquoise, 2. Bright red, 3. Green. They all stand out to give your home a little more curb appeal and from the photo, would accent the house. Seems like HGTV has something online to help decide door color?? I know every issue of their magazine features a door of the month.

I would think a kelly green or forest green. I wouldn't go with anything that is on the blue side. Go to a Home Depot, lowes, hardware store and pick up paint strips of colors you like and put them up against the brick. Decide what you like best, then go and get small paint samples and paint on scrap lumber. Leave them outside and look at it in the morning light, noon and late afternoon. Also, at night with your porch light--led lights can really distort color. I hope this helps!

    dark green
  • B J Alexis B J Alexis on May 05, 2016
My front door was re-painted in 2013 to a high gloss Benjamin Moore, Cote De Azur, rather like a medium turquoise which stands out against the yellow house and slightly darker shutters. I get many compliments, even from joggers just passing by. Pick your favorite color, like in western Europe, the front door does not need to coordinate or match the house.
    • Lou Lou on May 05, 2016
Yes, we has seen such in Iceland, England and Scotland. We had hoped to retired to Scotland.

cherry red also roof of birdhouse.
    • Lou Lou on May 05, 2016
Red seems to clash with the brick. Thanks though.

  • Pam Walker Pam Walker on May 05, 2016
I think the dark shade of bricks that are in your home would look nice. It will complement the roof, the bricks & the top of the mini house you have out front. :)

Sherwin Williams has a color visualizer that allows you to upload a photo, create a selection (your door only) and try out every color you choose. Doesn't work on mobile devices but otherwise excellent. - and for your door I'd start with variations of blues.
  • Shirley Phillips Shirley Phillips on May 05, 2016
    A very pretty Teal
  • Rita Rita on May 05, 2016
I assume your roof shingles are in the black color family. If so, I would suggest a deep blue-gray to add depth to you beautiful front door. If shingles were brown then I would go with a darker red for dramaic punch. You seem to have a lot of greenery already so would not be too shy about adding color to the lanscape as well. Your entry would real pop with some sort of formal awning over door too. Have fund and good luck!
    • Lou Lou on May 05, 2016
Our shingles replicates grey hued slate. A deep blue would make a statement. Would you happen to know the name of a deep blue gray color?
  • Johnchip Johnchip on May 05, 2016
I would say black, but you might want to try matching the darkest tone in your brick, close to black, but likely has a touch of some ochre, umbers, terra cotta and maroon to it. As an artist I ''make my black" with ultra marine blue and burnt umber.

    • Johnchip Johnchip on May 05, 2016
@Lou Follow my advice, match the darker brick color, brick red ochre with some else, int that adds the black. ( get some cool swatches or chip off a side piece off the darker brick and go to the paint store) don't go sissy colorist with the door. Stay sophisticated simple. The house is strong enough with texture it does not need some and garden/decorator color to draw you in. A darker masculine color will make the house look richer and more secure.

With your brick... I'm madly in love with this Olive Green color. Go with a green, don't make it too crazy. ~Greens my fav color.~ Then accent with black black, on those lights of yours, BLACK house numbers, & a couple black urns next to the front door with Awesome Orange, or Peachy colored geraniums. It would be gorgeously classy looking.
  • Cyndi Cyndi on May 05, 2016
Go to Sherwin-Williams.com and put the picture online and try different colors. Maybe the Rookwood Dark Brown, Rookwood Terra Cotta or Renwick Beige...its a great color palette. What about adding shutters on the forefront windows...paint different color from front door. You need a pop of color to compliment the brick. You're blinds look green...are they? I don't want to sound rude or anything but white or almond would be better otherwise too much color going on. Send a picture when it's done. Nice house!

Green. It is the opposite on the color wheel from red, which is your brick color.
  • Lenore Lenore on May 05, 2016

Bright red door with charcoal for your trim. It will look a like a little bit of Ireland. Check out Irish row houses on line for inspiration. : )

Our front has been repainted a beautiful shade of green, Sherwin Williams Vogue Green.
  • Lou Lou on Aug 12, 2016
Our front door was painted a beautiful shade of green, Sherwin Williams' Vogue Green. The wall mounted lights were changed to smaller scale brushed nickel. Likewise, the door hardware was also changed to brushed nickel. No matter the light level the Vogue Green door is lovely.

A dark blue. I think it's called federal Blue. Red is my favorite color but on this house I don't think bright candy apple red would look good. A hunter green would look good too
  • Tonya Tonya on Nov 07, 2016
I love deep red or a bright rust. It would go great with the bricks.
