Best way to update this 1979 Thompson 6-drawer dresser?

I've been looking for something like this for a while now because of the things I've seen on this site! Now my dilemma is; what application/color is best? I'd like this to be used between my kitchen/family room as a buffet - using the drawers to store games. It measures 66" x 30" x 19. There is also a mirror, which I plan to use elsewhere in the house. The other idea is use is as a double vanity in the bathroom, but worry about losing too much storage by doing so. Any ideas?

Your application/ color depends on your color scheme in the room you use it in and the type of look you want. To get better help from the great people on this site, I suggest you include some pictures of your current room/s and let people know your style--modern, shabby chic, eclectic, etc.

With that edging of bamboo look, I would go oriental, paint it flat black and get some oriental knobs...an occasional piece of oriental and black is acceptable with any decor. I have very old fashioned mahogany traditional...even to wingback chairs...and I LOVE my heavily painted oriental piece!

It is a very busy piece and the picture shows really only the front. If the top is good wood I might strip it and re finish, but it looks a bit "wimpy" for lack of a better word, in which case I would put a real wood top on, thicker and a bit bigger so it has some oomph, stain it a dark shiny stain and paint the bottom whatever colour you like within your colour scheme. Painting wood is easy so don't sweat that part. If you like the handles you can keep them, spray paint if you need to, but I might buy knobs for all the smaller drawers, that kind of match the ones there just to make it less busy, but that's just me.
  • Ive seen that style redone. It's looks great as a Chinoiserie style. Do not use milk paint(which really should be done on raw wood unless it's General Finishes 'Milk Paint" which is really an acrylic paint!) or chalk paint on it. It's just not the right look for it. I've done many, many vintage redo's and can tell u that to this one right, will take quite a bit of work. If you are up for the challenge, let me know I can walk you through the steps. Or go to my before/after on my blog, click on a similar one, and see the steps. the worst step is stripping off that old paint. If you just paint over it, it will look like crap. Remove all of the hardware, clean it and use Bar Keepers Friend (powder cleanser) (it's like Comet) and some steel wool on it. It will shine up really well. Ditto for those corner pieces. They are brass and will shine up well. Doing that hardware will probably take you 2-3 hours, including the time spent removing it. I've seen that dresser done in vibrant colors (think Miami Beach) and it looks fabulous. Greens, coral, turquoise, even black and white, looks good. Don't paint it a dull, matte color. It will look horrible.
