Old tile floor...yuck

I have an old home and have been working on updating a lot of areas. Our Kitchen will be one that will require a major overhaul and I'm just doing the make do stuff now until we can get it worked out. BUT I have the ugliest 8 by 8 inch square tile. Any ideas on how to change it without having to remove it? If I remove it and add something else, I will just have to redo it again in a year with the major overhaul.
The cabinets are all going to be white here soon. but this is the floor tile.

A quick and easy fix would be a laminate floor. They range in price, depending on the quality and "brand" name, from $1.00 to $5-6.00 per square foot. Relatively easy to install and easy to remove when you decide to finally do away with the existing tile. Look at either Home Depot, Lowes or the warehouse clubs for a great assortment of patterns, colors and prices. If you need any assistance.....let me know. Gary

Paint them 2x1 or 2x6, to elongate the pattern, like subway tile.

Is there a certain look you are going for? I say paint each individual tile, great quick fix with minimal investment. I'm partial to black and white tiled floors, especially in a kitchen.

I suggest purchasing inexpensive plywood and sanding it smooth then laying it atop the tile floor. You can make your own stain using tea bags or the liquid made from steel wool covered in vinegar. If that is to gray or rustic weathered looking do a white wash over the top.... Try taping of the grayed wood into a pattern that you like... Chevron or harlequin or checkerboard..... Draw a paisley pattern using a large stencil... Then seal it with poly. This will get you buy until you find something you love. I am excited to see what you come up with. My house and kitchen are shabby chic, with touches of Lake Decor cause we live on the lake. I like the painting idea but how do you paint it, with what kind of paint so that it does not wear off. It's a high traffic area!

Olivia I love that idea, but the tile is really uneven. Not sure how to do an even layer on top? After getting some quotes on the kitchen reno, it may be more like 2 years...boo

The quickest and easiest fix is to have the grout cleaned or replaced. A lighter color grout will make a world of difference.

Yes, you can install laminate on an uneven floor. The underlayment, which is a thin padding that is part of the laminate floor installation, makes it lay evenly and improves the sound,,,,,,,,so it sounds like wood. IMHO....if you find the floor ugly, I doubt that new grout or painting will change your mind. Gary

Landlights, thats a great idea. I think I will look into it. I love the painting idea, but honestly that sounds daunting!! the clean grout would for sure help, but it's the tiny tiles that make me crazy. They are just so 80's..

The simplest thing to do is to color seal your grout to the color of the floor so it will look uniformed and new this is what my color sealer do call if you have any questions 1-800-631-0716

My friend hated the tile at her lake cabin and we just decided to pop it all up (kind of a big job but no cost involved) exposed the floorboards, sanded and sanded, painted a pattern on them, put a sealer on that and now they are ready for when they have the money to do the grand redo! The total cost was less than $50. And we did it one weekend.
