My Orchids

Hope everyone enjoys these as much as I do. I have one that is just getting a new bloom on it also. Want to put them outside on my porch but still a little cold here in PA.

Nice...I just picked up an Orchid Saturday from my local Home depot...they had a big sale.

My sweetie was impressed...when I told her I got her a "surprise" from home depot...she was thinking I got a "new tool" or something and was going to "gift" it to her.

You do have a tender side!!! Your sweeties' orchid is beautiful. That's one flower I've never attempted to nurture so I'll let you - or her, do the trial & error bit and you can give us updates - OK????

Actually they aren't as hard as people think. I use ice cubes to water them, throw a few on top they water and give off humidity. During late spring till Fall I put them on the covered porch out of direct sunlight. They love it. Winter them in the bathroom that has a small light above them. It keeps them until spring. So far so good. I actually have two with new shoots on them.

Sandra R, your orchids are beautiful. I killed everyone I tried to grow indoors. It is very difficult to keep them beautiful indoors but quite easy in Florida where they can be outside most of the year. You are doing a great job.

Dorene, I've had many of my orchids for years since I keep them outside sheltered in trees, and watered about once a week. When it goes below 50 all orchids go in my sunroom. I don't fertilize them as I have a Koi pond and water them with pond water. All orchids I tried to grow indoors died.

Dorene, they should be a green color. I think if they are white they need water.

Dorene, I think you need to post your problem on hometalk as a separate issue. Sandra R posting doesn't have these issues.

Dorene sorry I haven't been in touch. With my orchids I use Ice cubes,2-3 per week. I'm not from Florida so I can't keep mine out all year round. Maybe you could try the ice cubes and also just mist them with water once or twice a week. That sometimes will help. Because of your climate they are drying out to fast on top but not down deep. Also maybe the soil is to compact for them. They tend to like loose woody soil, almost wood chip consistency.
