When using chalk board paint for crafts, after it dries do you have to shade the whole thing with chalk? I can't seem to write on my board very well and it doesn't wipe off completely. what are the full steps as It did give on the can instructions other than paint and let dry completely. I'm doing something wrong! Help!

What kind of chalk board paint are you using? I have bought chalk board paint at Lowes or HD and it worked very well.

Liz I bought it from HD. I've watched videos where they say put the 3 coats and after it dries 24 hrs then take chalk and shade it all over. they never say wash it off or ????

I have used chalkboard paint on plywood and I let my 3 coats dry for several days and then took chalk on its side and shaded it top to bottom and left to right. Wiped it off and started writing and it has done fine. I think you have to really get a lot of chalk on it to "cure" it.

I did that too. Then did you wash off the chalk or use the eraser?
  • To season your new chalk board you heavily go over your new painted area with the side of the chalk- I often used sidewalk chalk because it goes faster. But really coat it well and then you can wipe off with a cloth. I have done both wet and dry and not sure that it really matters. I do clean with the wet when the dry isn't working, then allow to dry before writing. The point is to not burnish the paint with the chalk as you write and stain your new board. I hope that helps. The new chalk markers they make are great too but you do need to use a wet cloth to remove.
