What color for this buffet cabinet?

Lou
by Lou
Back to well I come. This request is for a suggested color for our buffet cabinet. As you can see it is currently the color of the kitchen cabinets. One color on our minds is dark green. Note: all other colors are set and will not be changed.
Please give us your suggestions! Btw, you folks are great.

I suggest the same color as the bead board on the side wall. You have quite a few colors in this area already, unless you are going to change the color of the kitchen cabinets.

My inclination is maybe to go with a shade of grey that has a green base to it. My second suggestion is white.

Consider the same color as the bead board and adjoining cabinet on the backside of the buffet. That would make the piece look like one larger unit instead of an accent. It's not directly connected to the kitchen cabinets and is really treated as part of the eating area rather than the kitchen cabinetry. I would even stain the top wood a bit darker to help it coordinate with the wood on the wall as well as the dining set.

I agree with laurel on this one.

White is always good but it looks like you like color. I would suggest Sherwin Williams "Naval" or "Kilkenny". Buy the Sherwin Williams brand, it has a very slight sparkley shimmer to it, the other brands don't have that shimmer even though you ask for "Naval." Naval is a very sophisticated color and is one of my absolute favorites. It glams up everything it touches. Kilkenny is sooo fun. If you like oranges, I would suggest "Coral Reef"by Sherwin Williams but then I think you'd have to change the red wall color above your beadboard. By the way, I want to warn you against the Cashmere line by SW, I love SW but Cashmere is the worst paint I've ever used and I have used many different types of paint. HTH :)

The knobs are being changed to satin silver. Look at the first small drawer in the frontal image. Thanks though.

I agree with MN MOM! Dark green would just darken the room and bring attention to it. The eye would be drawn to the dark color. The bead board color would make it blend in and add a little more brightness to the eating area.

I like the Naval (Navy) idea and that's what I would think looks nice with the pale green cabinets and white trim, however...I would change the color above the beadboard wainscoting, if I were you to either white as well, same as cabinets or the navy. White is always an option for the cabinet as well and would bring a classic calm and airy feel to the space. Have you ever thought of a 'just barely and muted butter' yellow? That would bring a country cottage vibe in, but again, I certainly urge you to change the upper wall color to, in that case, white! Less is often more and the accessories can give that pop of color, needed or desired.

The burgundy (not the actual name) color atop the SW Balanced Beige bead board was seen by my dear wife in an old home. She instantly loved it so that color is there to stay. We've been married almost 37 years so I hope to be alive to celebrate that anniversary. FYI, before the remodel the beard board was cream and the top coral. That original high bead board with semi rough upper boards is a duplicate from a very, very old southern home.

I think adding a different color such as yellow would add a splash of sunshine to your kitchen.

@Angelic I'm with you, it looks like the colors in the kitchen might have been inspired by fiestaware dishes, so there should be a great yellow tone in there to pick out.

I like your original idea of painting it a dark green. Choose a darker green compatible with your green cabinets. Since the floor and bead board are light, a darker green on the piece would make a nice color contrast. It would 'warm' up your dining area, too. I love green! Such a soothing 'nature' color. I would love to see the top of the dresser stained to match the beautiful stain on your kitchen table. It would unite the two pieces.

I would change out the drawer pulls, take the glass out and add tighter chicken wire type closure. Not liking the darker green idea, maybe sand it down and add a wash of some type. White or cream, freshen up the wood on top with a medium stain. What a beautiful piece by the way!

@Lou Wow! I am impressed that you built this and your beautiful cabinets.

I recently designed a kitchen for a client with sage cabinets and the island was done in Cardinal red-very similar to the color of your wall. If your buffet was not painted, I would have suggested that you refinish that unit to match your table and chairs.

I would do a dark gray
  • Carolyn Noyer Carolyn Noyer on May 10, 2016
Personally I like a bright lime green
  • Johnchip Johnchip on May 10, 2016
I agree a dark color would work best, but you have a lot of different colors in the room now and you have to be careful you do not end up with the 'gypsy caravan' of kitchens. Maybe just a dark stain over the sage green you have, lettIng it stay the undertone.

I think a Chocolate or dark brown would look nice and keep the knobs. It would match all colors in the 2 rooms

And add silver to the edges.

I love the buffet!! What if you used the same red as the wall? Another idea is to use a pretty sage green. Sage and "barn red" look really nice together too. Add an arrangement of old red transferware plates to that red wall for a real pop of color! You can pick them up cheaply at "antique" and "junque" shops.

I like the red as well. My kitchen is a lime green with red accents and I love it.

Seeing that you have already 3 colours in your kitchen, I would not bring in a fourth, if you look at your table and the colour of the top panel of your wall they match well, so I would match that colour and replace the knobs with gold ones, or alternately do it in beige like the other wall panel with gold knobs .
  • Sandra Sandra on May 17, 2016
I, too, like the red idea. Not bright red, but like your wall. Remember, it's paint. If you hate, change it. Of course, you could go with a dark forest green, if you like a tonal look. I think that would add warmth.
