Salvaging a Table Top

This happens to me a lot. I find a piece of furniture at a GREAT price but the top is a wreck. So I figured out a way to work around that. I could refinish or paint the tops of badly damaged tops but to me this is WAY cooler
This drum table had a lot of veneer damage that I really didn't want to tackle so I decided to do something I been wanting to try for a long time.
I used Modpodge and gift wrap to get this look. For a more detailed tutorial come and visit me here :

LOVE the map wrapping paper! Where did you get it? Your table turned out beautifully!

Before I goof up, do you think this would work with the modge podge and a thin printed fabric instead of paper?

Has anyone ever seen a drum table like that with a cut out that holds a small rectangular tray?

Hello! Just chiming in for a weird reason! I refinished the same table just a couple years ago (down to the claw feet & drawer pull!)! Someone attached a formica counter like thing to the top to mine, so it was particularly difficult to smooth the surfaceenough to paint once I got that thing off, but I did not know decoupage as an alternative at the time! Very cool re-do! Mine is painted all black, and I gave it to my daughter as a house-warming gift in her first apartment! :) Wish I could send you a pic of it!
