Tigerwood (Rawr)

Love the bold colors? Or hate the "stripes"?

Tigerwood (ASTRONIUM FRAXINIFOLIUM) is a beautiful exotic Brazilian hardwood which provides one of the most unique patterns you will ever see. Because of its incredible beauty, tigerwood is highly sought after for both interior and exterior applications. From doors to musical instruments to flooring and decking, tigerwood is a great choice and an excellent alternative for those looking for a light-colored wood but prefer something harder and more exotic than maple or beech.

Tigerwood is one of our favorite choices for a butcher block countertop!

The operative description is Brazilian Hardwood--as in destruction of forests to harvest??????? I'd have to carefully research! It is beautiful.

Good question, Jamie. Love the idea, though. Seems it would make it easier to mix light and dark colored wood pieces when decorating.

It is lovely, but I don't want to see the forest/rainforest harmed just because we love it. :(

I like the wood, it's beautiful. But, for decorating purposes, I think it is too busy.

I like it on the floor and guitar but not the counter. It's too busy that close to the eye.

Like many other woods, it IS important to consider the source of Tigerwood. We recommend you get this wood (as we do) from a reputable dealer who uses Tigerwood that is responsibly harvested from managed forests to provide a truly renewable resource.

Like Bamboo, beware the "cheapest" option, as those are the ones that are not harvested responsibly and are not the best quality.

"Tigrewood" is actually harvested from three different species of tree. Most marketed in North America does come from Brazil, but that species also grows from Mexico to Argentina. One of the Tigrewood species also grows in Africa.

This is a problem with many of the tropical lumber species. Witness mahogany which in many cases is not true Honduran mahogany at all - or some of the South American 'cedars' ...»

Another example is Merantii, which may encompass up to four hundred individual species in the SE Asia and south Pacific area.

Simply ask your retailer to document source of origin for you
