paint does not want to stick to melamine without a lot of sanding....even then its a bit iffy
  • They can be covered with wood veneer. Look brand new.

I have heard about this product by Rustoleum called Transformations. It is supposed to work on melamine, but I haven't tried it yet
  • I used the Rustoleum product earlier this year. The stuff really does stick, but you have to clean the surface really well beforehand and follow the instructions exactly, or you'll get chips later. http://www.uglyducklinghouse.com/2011/03/bathroom-changes-using-rustoleum.html

The right prep and primer and any surface will hold paint. Cabinet shop suppliers have a specific primer for melamine. You can also go to your local Sherwin Williams for a primer called XIM that sticks. And yes, clean them well. Best, Charles

There is melamine paint and primer that some use to paint countertops in camper restorations. 220 sanding, tsp cleaning and the melamine primer and paint should do the trick. It will be smelly so make sure to have good ventilation. I would look under the name melamine paint for a dealer.

Don't know if you have done anything yet with your cabinets as your post is going on two years now. I also had white melamine cabinets on my house in Kennesaw ......check out my recent post to see them now .....my melamine peeled right off on the doors and drawers .....but the rest of the cabinets, I sanded really well and used plain primer, latex paint, glaze, and polyacrylic. They are holding up really good .....no peeling, scrapes, etc.
