My niece called me and told me there was a cabinet on the side of the road by her house and her husband and she would be bringing it over to me
It was filthy and to be honest, I had no idea what kind of cabinet it was, nor did I have the foggiest idea what to do with it.
It sat in my garage for over 2 years. My husband and I just started using it for storage because I just couldn't connect with it in any creative way. The top had sliders that came out and it baffles me what this could have been built for. Then one day Inspiration..... After 2 years I finally had a plan, and the good news was that I didn't have to paint or re-finish it.
First step, going to my wood pile and getting old fence boards and cutting them to size.
Next step, staining the boards a dark walnut to match the color on the cabinet. Then lining them up and glue them in place
Once the doors were hung, I got out my masking tape and started getting a grid for my hardware
I used black hammered metal on the cabinet, so the label handles needed a quick coat to match since they were recycled from an old cabinet and were brass.

It's a slide top server. The top slides to the sides when you need additional room for serving a larger dinner party, to prevent the table from becoming too cluttered. And they slide back together when you don't need the extra space.
