Question about wet sanding on furniture

Hi all, I use Varathane or General Finishes High Performance, which are water based poly. I use at least 6 coats before I start sanding due to the artwork I have underneath. If I sand before that, it takes away from the design. At any rate, when I wet sand, I do it very lightly, but some of the poly starts to come up. I'm assuming it is because it is a water-base. Or am I putting too much water on my sanding paper? Any ideas? I don't know if you can see in the picture, but it seems to make a slightly grey hue .... which maybe will get better with the next layers of poly. Not sure, just didn't want to go too much further until I got some good advice.
Before the wet sanding
After the first wet sand

  • Hey girl! Another beautiful project :-). I dry sand with an extra fine (maybe super fine?) sanding brick. Just lightly like I was wiping down a kitchen counter. GF has some great how to videos which I found on Pinterest of all places. You might want to check their technique out or go to their forum or FB page and ask them directly if you don't find an answer you like. They're very helpful.

One of the best techniques I learned when wet sanding is to use a 2000 grit sanding paper but use baby oil or a semilunar oil to sand. It gives it a beautiful smooth finish 😊

This is not wet sanding but to get the same kind of finish, use brown paper (the kind that groceries used to come in. Really works great! I am editing to say, the paper should be dry.

@Elaine Simmons Hi Elaine, I have used this technique as well. And maybe I need to just stick with this... I'm always trying new techniques and wanted the wet sanding to work, but just seams to take too much off.

If the poly is cured, the water shouldn't affect it. What kind of sandpaper are you using? It should be wet-or-dri, and a very fine grit. Regular sandpaper of the same grit size as the wet-or-dri seems to be much rougher.

@Darla The poly probably isn't cured enough. I am using 320, then 400, then 600 ... all wet/dry! I'm guessing I'm not waiting long enough!
