Building a Garbage Can Enclosure from Scrap Lumber total cost $30

I wanted something to hide my garbage cans (and to avoid any problems with bears) but I didn't want to spend a fortune so I scrounged leftover building materials from my friends and from the side of the road and the dump. Now I have a little garbage can enclosure that is just the right size, easy to build and didn't cost much at all! #Storage #DIY #Shed #Love2Repurpose #Recycle
Time: 2 Days Cost: $30 Difficulty: Moderate

The roofline isn't so pretty in this shot. The underside has since been painted and flashing installed (tucked under the shingles, all around the edge)

The only real money I spent on this project was for handles, a latch and some hinges! Scrounging can be so lucrative!!

Anne D....This reminds me a lot of my wood shed I built some 15 years ago. My cost there was also about $40. The bulk of my shed was built from joists and decking that I replaced when I upgraded my deck. I had some T&G siding I got from a friend and my "purchased" materials consisted of some ply and shingles for the roof.

Scrounge is my middle name! So many people chuck out their scraps without realizing how much they could do with them. All I need is a bit of trim to hide the OSB from view and this shed is complete! Thanks for your comment.

Up-cycle and no landfill are my middle names. In the last year alone I have salvaged about 2 1/2 cords worth of lumber from deck and Fence demo that I've used in my wood stove to heat my home. It is a win win all around. Firewood is "carbon neutral" compared to natural gas, propane or electricity produced from coal and other sources. My clients also save on trash costs.

When I have been brought in on some other projects as a sub-contractor I am often appalled at ...»

the level of waste in the building trades. I have seen whole houses and commercial buildings torn down that still had decades of life in them. In this post "peak oil" culture this is not sustainable.

I love it. I want to get my husband to make one, even though we live in a duplex type of apartment. I think that it would be a great starter project for him

@ Karianne R the plans I used were pretty straightforward. If he has a very basic knowledge of building or carpentry, he should be able to do this in a day.

My enclosure was free. It is an old Arrow metal building display. Two feet deep, just the size for a large trash can.

The only downside is that the osb isn't treated and there is no flashing to keep rain from getting under the shingling/roofing material. The roof will fall apart after a year or two because of rain and snow. Otherwise great job. Don't mean to be a downer, but coming from the northwest we always have to consider rain since it's here 9 months out of the year.

Anne D...Kelly's comment above is sound...adding some drip edge the the roof will help things a lot. you should be able to tuck in in under the shingles. This will protect the exposed OSB edges from the weather.

Absolutely, I ran out of time on this project last fall when I built it. I have every intention of adding drip edge to the roof. Thanks for your comments!

You're welcome Diana Dray ! It's held up really well. I added flashing all around the roof line - tucked it underneath the shingles so it looks a lot prettier now! lol
