*Choice of Material: Different materials produce a different engraved look of the same photograph. Therefore, it is recommended to test one photo with different materials to determine which material offers the look you want.

*Selecting Artwork: Not all photos are fit for engraving. Photos having larger portion of a single color usually do not engrave well, especially on wood. Photos with a wide variety of shades, and a gradient pattern from light to dark produce the best results.

*Digital Images: - Make sure to get digital photos of the highest resolutions. Low resolution images are not suitable for engraving.

*Scanned Images: If you are scanning the photos, get the largest size available, and scan at a low resolution like 200 or 300 DPI. Stretching a photo during the scanning process will reduce its resolution, and provide inferior engraving results.

*Color or Black and White Photos: Color photographs are the best source for laser engraving purposes. So, even if the photo is black and white, you should always scan it in color, as most modern scanners have this function. The color process provides valuable data, which is useful when manipulating the photo.

*Software Selection: Most modern graphics software such as PhotGrav and PhotoLaser have the features to allow you to modify a digital or scanned photo for laser engraving.

*Resolution for Engraving: Engraving photos at a lower resolution such as 200, 300 or 400 DPI produces the best results. However, if required, you can also choose higher resolutions like 600 or 1200 DPI for engraving.
