Chalk paint finish

I would like to know why you are told to use wax as a finish after painting with chalk paint?
Also could I just use a flat or satin varnish on it. It would be so much easier to spray a clear coat or
sealer on your piece.

Chalk paint has a dry rough finish when not waxed. When you wax, the paint absorbs it and gives it almost a creamy matte finish, unlike anything you can achieve with any other finish. Yes you can coat it with something else, but it does not look or feel the same. I also don't use the fancy expensive wax, nor do I use the expensive chalk paint, I make my own chalk paint and use Johnson's paste wax, works the same just much less expensive.

If you use ShabbyPaints, our Vax/ReVax is the easiest application of "wax" on the planet! Check it out...can be applied with a damp sponge or brush and doesn't have the smell of the varnishes; can do inside! Check out www.shabbypaints.com

I have followed a FB group that uses a lot of Chalk paint. Their rule of thumb is wax for less used items and poly urethane/acrylic on table tops or things that will get a lot of use and abuse. So I would think you could varnish anything you wanted to that is chalk painted. Just remember that 1) if you use glossy it will be shiny, flat won't be and 2) use polycrylic on light colored paints...it will not yellow like varnish. Use varnish on dark colors. Hope this helps.

Wax penetrates and helps seal but it's not a seal that will hold up to a lot of water. Chalk paint feels, well...just like chalk. It's flat. The waxing gives it a beautiful sheen. Annie Sloan also makes a dark wax which you wipe on and then wipe off and it gives a different finish, more of an antiquing. You buff the wax right after putting it on. There's a satin polyurethane that you can use instead of wax which gives a nice sheen without being too shiny. I really like the feel of the wax, though. You do have to rewax occasionally. Good luck on whatever you do.
