What's the easiest way to mount something that weighs about 10lb to the wall? What am I missing?

If you're not attaching to studs, you need anchors. The little plastic things that will hold the screw firmly. For ten pounds, that should do it. -

Use the anchor bolts that you posted, they will not come out.
