I love this idea of recycling old tires! Personally, I like the multicolored tiered planters. Could also do mosaic tiles, pebbles, or glass beads that are flat on one side on them. They are lovely painted, however. Think of all of the tires that are on the bottom of the ocean, because of a lack of recycling. Re-purposing is an excellent concept, and using tires as planters is a great application!

Sandra - it's really been interesting how this tire planter idea has taken off again. I did my first one this year and had a blast. Who would have thought old tires would be in vogue again!! I think you must be new to HT. We welcome you and hope to see a lot of you on here!!

What kind of paint do you use on the tires?

Peggy Vance good question. I am sure they will tell us, right Susan S ?

What kind of paint do you use to stand up to watering and sun heat? And what is holding the soil in the bottom of those colored ones?

Peggy Vance & Bernice H - Well, first off, I didn't use the regular full size tires but I used the riding lawn mower size! One of them still had the rim and it would not budge so I had no choice but to "roll with it" (no pun, I swear)!! That's the one I made into my Leopard Print planter and just added potting soil right into the rim and planted succulents and a small ...»
cactus since they have shallow roots. The other ones I put an old coconut liner in the area I was planting in - the tire is sitting up right and we put a chain through the tread to hang it with. The coconut liners keep the soil from washing around the inside. If you're using larger full size tires I would think you could still use the large coconut liners and just set it inside the tire hole when it's laying flat. IF you're going to build layers - I honestly haven't figured that part out but logically, I think you'd probably need to just set a pot inside and balance it. Maybe some slats of wood would work for support. I could not find anything in the above post to explain how they did it!! Hope this helps some!!

    • This was going to be my tribute to red, white & blue!! The red flower has bitten the dust now that it's colder. Looks scruffy but you get the idea!! 1
    • This is the Leopard print planter w/Hen & Chicks and
a Cactus. I'll need to bring it in soon.

    • Green tire. Never got finished but I'm going to find little frogs to put on the outside and probably a hanging vine of some sort next summer. 1

You asked what kind of paint - on the blue & green ones I used Krylon spray paint and on the leopard print it's just regular acrylic craft paint. If you want more details on the LP click on my profile pic and you should be able to find it.

you use laytex paint but there someting ? i'll get the name later, you have to wash them down rinse them and dry them or the paint will only las a year or so because of the road oil on them i put a wire mesh in the upper ones so the soil would not fall through. a friend did the and planted strawberrys in them

Fantastic! Using bolts and washers, these could be attached top, bottom and sides and actually serve as a wall! With all that dirt in them, they will certainly bed sturdy!
