DIY Bookcase Media Wall

I live in a tiny condo that was filled with boring apartment-grade finishes when we bought it. I've slowly been customizing each space, and my favorite way to do that is with built-ins. I just finished this built-in bookcase media wall in my living room. The lower cabinets are stock wall cabinets from Home Depot. I made the countertop out of cedar 2 x 4's using a Kreg Jig, and the upper bookcases were made with MDF and 1 x 3 lumber. I topped each one off with a very inexpensive light (actually found in the outdoor lighting section) from Home Depot.
The finished bookcase media wall. I left the middle section open for a large flat screen t.v. There's a hole in the countertop towards the wall for cords, and an electrical outlet accessible in the middle cabinet.
All trimmed, painted, and lights installed.
I used stock wall cabinets (12" deep) from Home Depot as lower cabinets, so I had to build a base for them. I was reusing some cabinets from a previous media wall attempt that didn't turn out so great, which is why they're painted.
I made the countertop out of cedar 2 x 4's using a Kreg Jig. The countertop is 12 feet long, so I built it in place. All of the pocket holes are on the bottom, so the top is perfectly smooth.
I made the basic structure of the bookcases out of 1/2-inch MDF.
I trimmed out the bookcases with 1 x 3 lumber, and also added support under each shelf at the back wall. The shelves are VERY sturdy.

I noticed the center section of your base is 6" further out than the sides. Was this just for the appearance or is there a use for the space behind? I am planning to do the same thing along a wall in a room with carpet. Would you recommend cutting carpet out? Did you use any anchors to the floor or just in wall studs? Great job

You did a gorgeous job. You should be really proud of your result. I wish I had this in my house.

Very nice. I want to do this in my parents bedroom because they have no space with the dresser they have.
