if it is peppermint you will definitely smell it. -
If it has a really strong fragrance that is more savory than minty, it could be the ornamental oregano. Can't remember it's botanical name.... -

Yes, it smells a like a type of mint, just not peppermint. My mom has peppermint and spearmint plants but the leaves look nothing like these. -
It looks like something commonly called Mexican oregano to me
