So my friend Michelle Nicole found this great table at a thrift store for me after mine fell apart. I loved the wood grain but hated the wood color of it cause I love bright colors!
Since she makes this amazing product she was like let's sand it down and unicorn spit it! I was like YES!
So without the leaf it has this amazing wood grain that reminded me of a fireball! So Michelle decided to use her mariposa technique she established August 3rd 2015.
Finished fireball minus the seal finish
Her end result on the table without the leaf. This was delivered to me and I sealed it with famowood 2 part epoxy. So I could have left it just like this and done the leaf a solid color.......
First attempt of finishing the leaf
So this is what I ended with the first time just solid leaf done in Molly red pepper unicorn spit, needless to say it didn't speak to me I didn't love it. So I left it in the table for five weeks just like this and finally was like I need to replicate her mariposa technique without being able to follow the wood grain. Cause as you saw the leaf did not have the beautiful fireball wood grain.
Unicorn spit used
So I went to my paint room and grabbed my Molly red pepper, Phoenix Fire, midnight blackness, and lemon kiss. Unicorn spit now comes in the tall bottles in the back I kept my short bottles for diluting my spit and using it that way. I also grabbed four small sponge brushes water and paper towels. Now the mariposa technique is follow the wood grain with the spit to get the design. I had to replicate this on the leaf by sight with the two sides.
Just starting
I started on one side doing the peaks of color to match I used unicorn spit one part of color and one part water so that it was diluted 50 percent. I probably used not even 1/4 of an ounce of unicorn spit of each color on this leaf which shows how far this stuff stretches
I did the other sides peaks then started to add the fireball burst but had to do two since with the table open and the leaf in place it makes two bursts instead of one
Progress on the burst
Making progress not done yet
And done!!!
Now that I have all the unicorn spit applied I allowed it to dry overnight I then lightly sanded it with ultra fine sand paper by hand to smooth all the spit down. As I am currently pregnant I can not seal the leaf yet with the famowood but I'm including the pic of when I sealed the end pieces with it. Which by the way that is why the end pieces are that beautiful super shiny look.
How I prepped for famowood this is an after
So I put a large plastic drop cloth all around the table and floor as famowood needs to be done in a dust free area. I also put aluminum foil on the moving parts so that the table could still slide open for the leaf and painters tape to cover the pins to hold the table together. I strongly encourage anyone who hasn't used famowood glaze coat to YouTube unicorn spit famowood glaze coat tutorial!!!
Personally I feel best product ever
So here is where you can get unicorn spit. Now some of you may be asking why unicorn spit? Well I'm glad you asked!!! First remember I said I'm pregnant like really pregnant, I did this leaf project at 39 weeks pregnant it is completely non toxic so I can use it pregnant and not worry about it at all. It smells like jasmine and my little man loves the smell of it. As you saw I had done it in solid Molly red pepper at first and didn't like it, guess what I didn't have to sand it off to restart nope I just spit right over it! I also can dilute that entire bottle meaning I get double the siZe for same price! The colors also don't muddle as I work and they also stay very vibrant whether on raw wood, chalk paint base, latex paint base, etc. also my favorite part is this was made as an art therapy for people with disabilities and is so easy to use it allows everyone to love and appreciate art!
