How To Create Or Sew Grain Sack Curtains

Think out of the box when there's a problem! That's exactly what we did to create these GRAIN SACK curtains. Our problem? The sun! Find out what we did...AND we didn't use curtain rods either!

We had a problem. A very sunny problem. Too much afternoon sun in our screen porch. With odd size screen openings- we came up with this...

Laid grain sacks on table to decide on placement/design. To add length to some I cut along the side seams. This allowed the back of the grain sack to be used in the length also.

Next pinned the grain sacks together. Pin and sew with the right side of the fabric together.

Cup hooks and cotton cording

Instead of using a curtain rod we used cup hooks and cotton cording for the hooks on the sewn Grain Sack panel.

After the cotton hooks were sewn on (make sure to space evenly by folding the fabric in half to mirror each hook) the cup hooks were easily screwed into a strip of wood that was part of the porch screen frame.

The cotton hooks sewn to the Grain Sacks easily slipped on the cup hooks. YAH no curtain rod was needed!

When not in use rolled up Grain Sack curtain

Instead of taking the Grain Sack curtain down we added a long piece of the cotton cord to act as a pully to drawn the curtain up...

Great idea. The morning sun is a problem on the east end of my back porch. Only change I would make is to sew a pocket across the bottom edge of the finished curtain an insert a dowel, same size as bottom edge. Then the curtain could be rolled up and secured (?) out of the way when not in use. You could maybe sew some loops on bottom edge to hook curtain in place when needed.
