Repurposing - Again!

Sherry McBride

My dad has been "cleaning" out his house and giving me furniture pieces. I keep bringing them out here to Hometalk for suggestions on how to "fix" them up because my imagination seems to be limited when it comes to furniture!
I don't even know what this is; and please excuse the dust. The upper door opens downward and lies adjacent to the inner shelf (like having a desk top to pull a chair up to). I do have some vintage china I could display if I wanted to remove the door and just have 3 shelves. But honestly, I'm at a total loss with this piece. Any help out there?
It stands 42 in. high and the shelves are 10 in. deep

This is what you call a Secretary Sherry so you got the desk part right. I think it would work great in a kitchen for a laptop station. The dishes could be displayed on the top and the bottom two shelves with the laptop hidden inside until you want to look up a recipe of play online while cooking. No worries about getting carried away online and not hear when your cooking needs your attention. I know I could use a laptop station in my kitchen for the reasons mentioned above. When you have a little get together this could also work as food station with serving dishes on the drop down desk and the drinks on the top.

@Sherry McBride what a beautiful piece. The wood is exquisite. Not sure if yolu have room in your kitchen but this would be lovely in there as a secretary/work station - display ceramic kitchen stuff such as soup turines etc. Refinish the wood to the colour that best suits your kitchen or other room and voila you have beautiful piece that would add character to any room. Could also be used in a foyer if large enough or a den or family room. That is one nice inheritance you have :) Thanks for sharing!

Gail - you and Becky both had the same idea and it's great! Why does my brain just not function with furniture ideas??? And this piece is already the same color as my kitchen cabinets; this just floors me. I love Hometalk - thank you ladies!

Oh wow that's great that it already matches your cabinets Sherry. What a neat piece to have from your Dad too.

What about an outdoor bar or buffet? Painted up, it would look lovely and fun.

Before you "do" anything to it, get it appraised! It may have some monetary value that you will ruin if you paint it or such.

Good point @Beverly. Did you look for a maker mark on this one too Sherry? I should have mentioned that, but I'm so attuned to MCM furniture that I didn't think about this having a mark too.

this is a desk. when you open the top you have a writing surface. it is probably hinged. do not put much weight on the part of wood supported by the hinge. usually the screws will not take the downward force
