I use a spray from Lowes. It has a slight smell of urine (which wasn't offensive and scent wasn't noticeable later to me)must be what keeps them away. They ate all my lilies and leaves, small grasses and the leaves off my hydrangea tree overnight last year and I decided that would not happen again this year.

Scent-based repellents will work until the deer get acclimated to them, or get hungry enough. One that I have heard of achieving good results is Plantskydd. But, really, the only way to keep deer out is with a fence.

I have used the product Plantskydd in the past with some success, but as @Douglas Hunt says a very tall fence is the best deterrent. Walter Reeves was having some people call in with success of using baby formula with a high casein content , dunno much about that though....
