Dog Bed

After many years of having dogs and contending with the yellow spots in the yard I came up with this idea to make it a little nicer to look at. I first timbered off an area off the back porch. Filled it with mulch and put in concrete pavers for the walkway. Then started planting shrubs and flowers inside the timbers and around the border of it. Made sure they were far enough away from the dogs MAIN area of use. Also put in a concrete fire hydrant for the male dog! Works great, no yellow spots. In the fall we also mulch leaves to put on top then wood mulch on that. Someone told me they decay of leaves helps to keep the smell down, it does work. Also I use the bed for starting shrub cuttings. Everything thrives in the soil. Maybe this will help others with the yellow spot problem. Have not put a roof on the back porch yet, thus the umbrella for the dogs.

For all you folks wondering about dogs peeing in your grass, if you start training them as puppies to go in the mulch, they will continue. My dog knows exactly what the word 'pinestraw' means when she's in the yard. It's another one of those 'ounce of prevention' things. Good luck teaching those older dogs new tricks, though!

y first two Akitas were five years old when first introduced to the mulch bed. They didn't seem to mind at all. One female one male.

I don't necessarily believe it's toxin in the dogs urine that is at issue here.

However human urine is good in the garden as long as it is diluted otherwise the salts as in the dogs urine will burn if not diluted.

I love the hydrant and beautiful garden. Good Job.

Thank you Paul, no matter what, if something is urinated on for a long period of time (day after day) it is going to kill it.

I poop patrol every couple of days, since they normally stay in the areas that there is no foot travel. If i know it is going to rain, I am more vigilant. I don't have urine smells in my yard. Lucky I guess. Sandra, your original post has really gotten me motivated to work out a mutually satisfying plan for the back yard. Working on it! Now measuring and coming up with drawn plans and pricing! Thanks for the motivation!

Melanie, Thank you for the compliment.I would also check with your township, here in PA we have a recycle place that mulches leaves branches etc. that the residence bring into the township building. The mulch then is free for anyone in the township, you just have to pick it up by truck or car. This saves me a lot of money on the mulch end and is recycling at its best.

Sandra, I have a pile of wood chips in my side yard. I have a friend in the tree business! That is what I use in the back yard for mulch. It lasts a long time and it's free!

There is a product on the market sold in pet stores that is suppose to help with acid in pet urine. It is given to the pet in his food. I don't know the name of it but I'm sure if you asked they could help you.

Be very careful giving your dogs tea. I raise Chinese Shar Pei. Tea or any product w/caffiene can cause kidney failure. Your dog was smart to avoid it

Tomato juice mixed in with the dog food stops the urine from killing the grass. So far it hasn't hurt the dog......

Susan, Maybe you could do a small scale of this by using container planters as the borders and some of the vinyl or plastic short fencing between the containers. a few hanging baskets could add height to the area also.

Dogs (and cats) eat a lot of protein and normal bodily functions break it down. Excess nitrogen is removed by the kidneys and is expelled in urine - and it's the nitrogen that burns the grass.

Ask your veterinarian about adding some canned dog food or water to your dog's kibble to help dilute urine. Also, premium dry dog foods have a higher-quality, more digestible protein, which can lower the nitrogen content of your dog's urine. If you do not make any changes to your dog's diet and ...»

you notice your lawn no longer has burn marks, it might signal a bladder problem. Infections make your dog urinate more frequently and in smaller amounts. Check with your veterinarian if you suspect your dog might have an issue.

My dog is wonderful. She goes to the back of the lot where a lot of ivy grows on the ground for her pooping and peeiing. My problem is with neighbors' dogs peeing on the front edge of my yard as they are walked and creating dead grass areas. Any help out there?

My problem is a multitude of cats.I have found that most of the citrus, hot peppers etc. do not work and I abhor the scent of cat urine and feces.

There is a product on the market, coyote urine, which you put around your area to keep cats, squirrels, etc. away. I am not sure if it smells to humans however.
