I found this in an old garage and was hoping someone could tell me exactly what it is. Three sharp blades and a foot step on the back. Looks like a spade of some kind.

    a roof rake.... removes shingles....
  • Could be a old shingle removal tool. The V shape gets around the nails and help pulls them out. The foot step your speaking about is the fulcrum that allows the unit to rock up when the handle is pushed down.

I was thinikng the same thing.

Thank you everyone for your input. I am leaning towards the shingle remover. I have tried using it for different jobs (without breaking it) and shingles sounds like a good project for it. It would have the leverage for that. If ever I do a roof in the near future, I will give it a try. Until then I will hang it on a wall so it can age some more. I mean this thing looks OLD. Thanks again all...
  • It's for making very large crinkle cut fries? (Actually I like the lawn edger or shingle remover--but I wanted to think out of the box).

It is a roof shingle shovel/remover, looks antique, may be worth a few bucks.
  • Rebecca D Rebecca D on May 15, 2012
I would display it on the garage or something rustic!

Kevin M.- I like the way you think. Food is my downfall. Clay B.- It is very old, just don't know how old. Everything in that garage was antique or older. Maybe my museum can tell me more about it???

This looks like a tool to help lift old linoleum or tiles.
  • dont think its for shingles ,would dig into plywood and hang up wouldnt it??? and as far as pulling nails ,they wouldnt be sticking up enough for the rake to grab them would they??? But I think we can all agree that its older than any of us most likely
  • Johnlene K Johnlene K on May 16, 2012
probly for the old slated thin roofs
  • Raymond G Raymond G on May 16, 2012
Sharon H- No not slanted. It's straight as an arrow. Due to its age I would guess back then all they had was hand split cedar shingles which this would probably work well for... I'll keep digging in hopes of finding its use somewhere.

Can't tell you what it IS--but thanks for posting it!!!---but it's NOT a slate roof tool. Those are made completely of forged metal and have a bent angled handle so your hand does not get forced into the sharp slate edges; and the other end has a flattened area that has a notch to cut thru a stubborn slate nail and two "wings" to pull against the nails or any stucl pieces of slate. . When you do a slate repair you are not re-nailing; you are cutting the nail and then using a "slate hook" to slide OVER the slate still on the roof; this will go over the edge of the slate being slid in to cover the spot where the broken one came off. Slate roof can last a life time and there is nothing like the sound of rain on a slate roof! Altho my addy on here is from our former residence we now live a few miles from the Red Slate Capital of the World--Granville NY! Many people use the red slates as accents or to put dates on the roof. Many of the older homes have elaborate scalloped slates or complex patterns---very interesting to go around and see what is up there!

It looks like something that you use for rows of seedlings We lived across from a old lady and she had one Not sure if that was what it was meant to do but that is how she used it Had to be done early April if the ground was soft She was amazing
