5 Home Decorating Ideas You Can Ditch For Good!

Some home decorating ideas that thankfully have rocketed passed their used by date and can be graciously forgotten. I have been guilty of following a few of the old rules but have since broken most of them. There's the Wood Rule, the Sofa Rule, the Small Room Rule, the Rug Rule ..
Three rules to break: If you have this look and want to update.. lose the matchy-matchy dining table and chairs. The rug is making the room look smaller than it is, go bigger or take it out, and create a point of interest!
Break the sofa rule: The sofa is no longer the most important piece of the living room. Use armchairs, ottomans or other interesting chairs for variety, better seating, color and height.
Break the coffee table rule: Every room needed a coffee table in the center of the room just in front of the sofa. Think outside the box with a footstool, ottoman or painted piece instead on the side, behind the sofa or in the middle.
Break the matching furniture rule by using seating with different shapes, sizes and styles in your living room. The different heights, fabrics and textures create interest for the eye.
Break the rug rule: Bare painted floorboards or stenciled concrete look great. Rugs can make rooms look smaller. Inexpensive rugs that go close to the wall edge can make smaller rooms feel larger.
Break the dining room chair rule: Different dining room chairs create a fun and eclectic look. They make dining more relaxed. Mix vintage with modern or antique. Have fun with it.

Find your comfort style and go with it. I'm not a matchy matchy person, but, I like things to coordinate and have a flow that is soothing and calm. I also try to not be too attached to objects - things break, get stained and people are always more important. My one son-in-law was trying to describe a certain style he liked to someone and said, "like Sarah's mom's house, homey". I find that very sweet, because my daughters are all more stylish and elegant than I will ever be. The first place I ever realized I like gray very much in a room, was at my one daughter's home. So I say make your home be the place where you feel at home, and it doesn't matter what the rules are.

@Trixie63 thank you. We all have different tastes in everything. I look at all the posts on Hometalk and like most of them. If there's an idea I can use, I'm happy. All the rest may be something someone else may like. P.S., don't grow up, it's no fun.
