I Painted The Bathroom Sink ...

You read that right. I painted my ugly beige fiberglass bathroom sink. Replacing the vanity wasn't an option. This was a low budget makeover. But the faux marble beige was going to seriously clash with my plans for bright white faux board and batten on the walls ...

@Karen, I put a link to a video of how to do it. The most important part of the whole process was the preparation of the surface ..

It's gorgeous. Personally, I like the dark cabinet. What a great idea! @Karen, I have a great product that works like Comet, but doesn't scratch and is all natural. Let me know if you'd like to hear about it.

Very creative.... if this is a before and after picture, how did you change the shape of the sink??

@Pamela. LOL. You caught me. You see, I painted the sink before I started blogging ... which meant I wasn't documenting 'befores' ... but my home has been blessed with two of the same (just slightly different shaped) sinks featuring that ugly beige faux marble fiberglass plastic like material. I'll be painting that other sink as well when I make my way to that particular renovation ... Linda

@Jean, thank you. I did paint that cabinet dark on purpose. The rest of the room is bright white board and batten ... the dark is a nice contrast.

I like what you did, looks brand new. I am glad someone asked about the shape of the sink, thought it was just me!

I once painted the inside of my claw foot tub. The paint I used was basement floor enamels for the waterproof reasons. The result was fantastic! I painted a sea mural for my kids to make bath time more fun.

Nice job! We found a way to paint things around our house that people kept telling us could not be painted, and they turned out fine. I hope your sink holds up to usage and time. It looks great!

@Therese -- what a fun idea with the mural! and @Kris, to hopefully sustain the sink (it's almost a year now and still looks great) I banned the kids from brushing their teeth in the powder room sink. Now they must truck it upstairs and let me tell you there was some moaning and groaning for a few weeks there ... :)

Did you move your sink....because in your before photo your toilet looks like it is on the left of the sink (not the right like in your new photo) and it is also against the wall on the right side (not the left in your new photo).

@Mary, unfortunately I didn't take a before pic of the sink in the powder room because I wasn't blogging then. However, we are blessed with two of the very same ugly beige faux marble fiberglass sinks in our home! Lucky us! So the before pic is of the second sink (yes, it still looks like that) in our upstairs bathroom. It will be painted too soon ...

I like what you did. I live in a house that was built in 1974 so the countertops were all briight yellow. I got some appliance paint and painted all of them brilliant white. The color has lasted a good while. I recently discovered some spray paint for car exteriors and plan to touch them up with that.

I did the same thing to the ceramic tile walls in my shower. It's held up for years now!

love your site too. Now there is hope for everyone that has inherited an ugly fiberglass fixture and can't afford to replace them. how Awsome is that?

@Jean C I would looove to find something besides comet that cleans as well but isn't as abrasive. I've always used bleach and comet ( shades of my mom , ) to clean sinks and tubs, but between the fumes and the scratching..... but nothing else seems to get them that clean.

@Karen V - I feel your pain, but I have good news. Check out the clay in this All-in-one kit. The best part is you can use it on ANYTHING, even glass (including cleaning burn on food on glasstop stoves). It also cleans and removes tarnish from Stainless Steel! NO toxic chemicals or fume. Wow-looks great! I just bought a can of epoxy spray can for kitchen applicances; same boat as not enough $$ to buy new so looking to remod! I wouldn't have thought of brushing - but anything over our green and brown marble countertop would be an improvement! Nice job!

KarenV...In a spray bottle I add 2/3 vinegar and 1/3 Mr Clean (the toxic green color) and this is all I use to clean my sinks. I've been doing this for years and never have any hard water build-up. The sinks shine so nicely too! Just spray it on and come back 5mins later and wipe all the dirt and soap scum away.

    Nice job.

Good case of 'almost anything can be painted' with the right process.
