Patriotic Poly Burlap Ruffle Wreath
Here's a tutorial on how to make a beautiful and easy poly burlap mesh ruffle wreath perfect for 4th of July, or for any day you want to show your pride in the USA!
To create this wreath you need the following: 24" work wreath, 3 rolls of 10" poly burlap mesh (I also threw in a 10" burlap mesh), 2 rolls of 2 1/2" wired ribbon, decorative picks, various embellishments, and a large plaque for the center. General supplies you'll need are a ruler, scissors, wire cutter, zip ties, hot glue, and for ease- a rotary cutter if you have one.
I stacked all of my mesh rolls on top of each other so I am cutting all three rolls at the same time. I cut the mesh every 10 inches. I wound up with 10"x10" squares for my ruffles. I needed two ruffles per work wreath twist tie and there are 18 ties. Since I was cutting three rolls at a time, I only needed to make 13 cuts to fill all 18 twist with two ruffles. This is why the rotary cutter makes it so much easier.
To make the ruffle, take a square of mesh (finished sides on the left and right) and start to gather the square up in the middle.
You wind up with something that looks kid of like a bow tie or butterfly.
Open a twist on the outer ring and place the center of ruffle into the twist. Give it about a twist and a half. Don't twist it all down a bunch of times because there is more to be placed inside each twist. Continue alternating colors around the outer ring, filling all of the twists with a ruffle. Next you'll go in and add a second ruffle of a different color on top of the ruffles you just placed. Open each twist back up and place your next ruffle on top of the ruffle below it, NOT on top of the twist you had made previously.
Continue around the outer ring then into the inner ring. Once all of your twists have 2 ruffles each, it's time to add your ribbons. You can see how to make your ribbons end in chevron tails at Under a Texas Sky . Add two ribbons per twist, then spread them out.
Add your wired picks ad hot glued elements as well as the large emblem in the center. I slipped a beefy zip tie through the plaque's holder and slipped it through the center hole. I pulled it up to the top of the work wreath and connected the zip tie there.
This is an easy and gorgeous wreath that you can absolutely compete in an afternoon.
