I have an area of the kitchen that isn't used in a very kitchen-y fashion and wanted to make it look like a separate cabinet. But I wanted to make the countertop different too - any ideas?
Oh, I'm not Miss Modern, I'm a Shabby Chic kind a gal and my house is very beachy decorated if that helps. I think I am going to do a blue glaze over the white cabinets in this area.
Cover it with a beachy ceramic tile? Or paint it. Check with Sherwin Williams - they have all kinds of paint you can use that are specially for this type of project. Pics when finished please!
I also have a problem with the doors, they constantly come loose and I'm always screwing them back in, whoever redid them didn't do a good job. I've tried jamming toothpicks into the holes and then putting the screws back in, etc. No one has any idea how to fix the problem so far. :(
I would reface the cabinets with either a painted finish or a glaze as you mentioned. The best alternate counter would be a nice butcherblock counter that will compliment the glazed look the best I think. The cabinets falling off is an easy fix just get some new 1/2 overlay hinges and install them on all the doors. If this becomes to much work for you to handle please contact us adn we can do it for you =)
Also I would Consider cutting out the center panel on all 3 top doors and putting someglass inserts there instead. You can use rain glass if you dont want to see ur stuff and it will make for a very nice finished product.
Looking at what you're using it for, you might: install cork board across the back (back splash area) and remove the loose cabinet doors, using baskets on those shelves. Of course, the cork/bulletin board area can be as simple or dressy as you wish to make it, and this can be combined with the color change mentioned.
You mentioned painting with a blue. I didn't understand which cabinet doors were the problem but what about just taking them off? I was able to get white baskets with a blue & white liner from Michael's. Use the baskets to organize the clutter. The back splash done with cork is a good idea and simple enought to do. There are enough beachy things for the counter to organize pencils... clear vase of shells. Go to Staples for pretty folders & holders that can be embellished so beachy.

You could remove the lower cabinet doors and due to your love of shabby chic/beachy style, put some little curtains in place. Find a beachy fabric you love and some very light sewing and cover each of the three cabinet openings. You could even decopage the same fabric on the wall between the upper and lower cabinets and add some molding on either side to make it look like a separate piece of furniture. Also, you could remove the upper doors and put the same fabric on the back of the cabinets and sides. Voila', a new cabinet look.
Here is the type that is in the cabinet now. They mounted them too close or something, so the door rubs when its closed and chips the paint off. They used a nut to space the screw out further but that isn't enough to fix the problem, the screw isn't secure enough to stay in place You can see it isn't flush with the inside cabinet due to the nut pushing the hinge out some.
They didn't do a good paint job either, sheesh.
one more thought: black board paint...
