That is incredible Patrick! is this a DIY or are you a contractor? Wondering how much one would charge per square foot for that kind of work -- so unique!
Wow Patrick.........a man with a vision! Love the creativity and planning that went into this. The room is now a warm, welcoming, fun place to be. Love your use of the dead space between the dry wall in the walls. That's something I like to do too.
Becky, I am a contractor. This project was for my mom actually. What happened was I I got bored one day at my own house thinking of what I could do in my tool roomto use the space more wisely. So my aunt wanted me to come over to her place and take a look at a botched jobanother contractor did. He took her for $180,000.00 on a remodel and left her sitting with a home completely unfinished. Thats another story! So while I was there the things that the contractor left as part of the tear out

and for now thats what she needed me to do was to get rid of those items. In that were her old kitchen cabnets,(wall mounted), . So I took them home and thought what could I do. I built a platform and changed the hardware, then found an old piece of 1/2" ply and began to build a work bench for myself. In doing that I had free reign to do what ever. I started to try something new with the stain process and came up with streaking it to make the standard ply appear to be an exotic wood. lol It turned out that everyone loved it, my mom included. So while my stepdad was on his mission trip to Africa she commisioned me to have free reign in the design and installation of an african themed office that used to be the guest room. The floor process took the longest, I dont want to seem like a bad guy because my mother insists on paying me for my work skills, so I didnt charge her though she ended up paying me about $8.00 per square foot on this floor alone. She insisted that you cant get this kind of custom work out of a "normal" contractor, "so many of them just dont take pride in their work anymore", is what she told me and that no one else will ever have a floor exactly like this one made her soo very happy. My stepdad came back from Africa one month later and his jaw was on the ground. Amazed at how "AFRICA" came home with him. I will post new pics of how it looks completely furnished soon. Thank you for your insterest. sorry for being long winded. This was a great project I loved it because of who it was for also it gave me a chance to have my hands untied with all the design start to finish.
If you get bored again, my house has much botched jobs done after Hurricane Katrina............look forward to seeing the new pics....enjoyed reading your post......
You are one fantastic son! I know I don't have the patience to do this or the creativity, unless it was paint by numbers :) Your mom is right, there will be no other flloor like hers.
Patrick, we appreciate the story! It allows us a peek into what inspired and drove your creativity. I'm sure not just your mother admired your talent and originality; your father did too. Your mother afforded you the opportunity to demonstrate your talents.
It was very nice the ooo's and the ahhh's upon his arrival back in his home all of the friends and family were there to welcome him back and yes they all have admired. Funny I got more satisfaction from his response to see his eyes light up was the biggest pat on the back. What a great feeling. Thank you all for your comments and praise. It keeps me going.
