Landscaping Outdoor Living Ponds & Water Features

A bad spot in the yard

I had a bare naked place right in the front yard that overlooks my porch and it was driving me crazy trying to keep grass growing. Finally I just gave up and did this instead. I like it much better and used materials I had on hand except for the lining. I also went to a bigger pump than the one I had. I'll use the smaller one for a new project in the back yard.

This hid an ugly spot in the yard that was in my direct line of vision as I sit on my porch....the sound of the water adds a wonderfully relaxing melody as it attracts bird...

Lovely little spot to sit and look at for relaxing. Especially great is that you did not have to spend lots of $$$$$ to get this result. Creative.

The old stumps add a lot of visual interest to the area as well. Good going!

Struggling grass or a lovely pond that attracts wildlife to your yard. I know which I'd vote for!

Sounds good, but there is some vicious wildlife in Florida! Just do not assume they are not enjoying your new pool!

Thanks everyone...oh yeah, I'm well aware of the wildlife here in FL. I'd love to put goldfish in there but from past experience, I know they draw cottonmouths. I don't mind the harmless water snakes but I draw the line at the ones that are dangerous. I also have a little terrier that keeps the racoons and armadillos etc. at bay.

Wow! Those who don't live in Fla. seem to have the impression we've even more wildlife than we actually have. I've had ponds for 15 years, and the only snakes I've encountered have been black racers and one nasty water snake (which I caught and released into the wild). The black racers keep the nasty venomous snakes at bay. Of more concern are the Cane Toads that can breed in the ponds, and I've euthanized at least 15 of those in the past 2 years. As for fish eaters, the primary ...»
concern has been herons and egrets. None of these have put a dent in my enjoyment of the ecosystem and fish!! You will definitely enjoy your new addition. Kudos to you!!

I have had my small pond for about 10 years and haven't had a problem with snakes or toads. I do have gold fish. Started with 12 have 1 left and have had this 1 for about 3 years. I buy feeder fish so don't worry to much when the disappear. No problem with mosquitoes. I do not have a water pump as I have a Tina water lily in mine. Birds have been my biggest problem with the fish. I have a birdbath but see a lot of doves in the pond. ...»

Every once in a while I will see the goldfish swimming among the grass and the lily. Very calming.

Oh yeah the dogs tend to use it as a water sorce even though they have several water bowls.

Enjoy your beautiful solution. (I live in central FL)

This really is beautiful...I have so much land with grass, ( also of wooded and thousands of pines)...I had thought about just not mowing alot of it any more...Don't have to worry about nasty critters here in Wisconsin...just deer, rabbits, squirels and birds mainly...I feel very lucky to be here out in the boonies...so beautiful...

I had a pond once, the eagles ate the fish, the dogs were muddy all the time because they thought it was their private pool and we were bit up by misquitos....I especially enjoy seeing them in someone else's (sp) yard...your picture is very inviting.

We had a little garden pond in Missouri. The raccoons ate the fish, deer drank the water and ate the flowers but I loved it. Your pond looks great enjoy.

I've had several people say, "if all else fails... turn it into a pond." I might have several ponds in my yard. ;)

    This looks very nice Robin.

To RS & CG - depending on the size of your ponds, I have a few ideas on on how to deal with your problems; Wing invaders think >Steel gazebo with retractable screening, or grape vine trellis, mosquitos>keep the water circulating, Wild life> preditor urine, clean dogs>pond liner material and pond or pool filter.

Robin F, your pond is adorable so I'm sure you will love it. Problem is once you start a pond it is hard to quit coming up with new ideas. Carol S, I agree with since I have a pond and I have always found a way to deal with any problem.
