DIY Sliding Fireplace Screen

6 Hours
Medium
I fell in love with a professionally welded sliding fireplace screen that I ran across on Porch.com. Since my husband and I don't weld and couldn't afford to hire someone to make it for us, we figured out how to DIY it in a way that wouldn't require welding. As far as I can tell, this is a totally original DIY idea that I am super, super proud of :) I will warn you that there are a lot of steps to complete this project, but don't be scared off. You can totally do this!
This is the finished product! Note: This is an abbreviated tutorial. The full tutorial is over 2,400 words that I don't have time to reproduce on Hometalk, but you can find the full, detailed tutorial with diagrams and all by clicking the link to the full blog post at the bottom of this Hometalk post. Thanks for understanding!
Using VERY basic and inexpensive materials such as hardware cloth (aff link) (if you don't know what hardware cloth is, click here to see it), nuts, bolts and steel bars, we assembled the screen without needing to weld! The only tools you need to complete it are:

Power drill and various size drill bits

Power driver

Metal snips

Angle Grinder

Metal cutting blade

Metal file
We used an inexpensive angle grinder to cut the steel bars that form the frame of the fireplace screen and the barn door rail on the fireplace to the correct lengths.
The barn door style fireplace screen hangs from a steel bar rail that is attached to the face of our fireplace. The steel spacers behind the rail provide for enough clearance for the screen to slide back and forth.
The wheels on the top of the fireplace screen are from simple (aff link) 1/2 inch swivel pulleys. We spray painted them black to match the steel bars.
There are a lot of steps involved in this project, so it takes a while to complete, but it really is easy and doable! It took us about 6 hours from start to finish to complete this project.
We absolutely love the industrial look it gives to our DIY concrete fireplace.
Again, there are LOADS more details and building diagrams in the full post.

You're most certainly right I do! I used to have a fireplace I needed this for with two kitties running around. I'll keep it in mind for my next place that *fingers crossed* has one!

wow! So clever! My husband can weld. (My welding looks like someone signaling for help with Morse code) I'm not sure this is quite what I want, but it gives me a couple of places to start! I can really see how the roller on the bar track could fit my own needs. Thank you so much for the post!
