I had a pair of very plain lamps but was dying for some gourd lamps. When I saw the shape of the Pom juice bottle in the grocery store, I saw a DIY in my future.
Use a Pom bottle to transform a table lamp
First, I cut the neck off the juice bottle, being careful not to dent the plastic. Then, I carefully cut along one of the bottle's natural seams from the neck all the way down to the bottom and then to the center of the bottle's bottom side (where there is a small indentation). Do not cut the bottle completely in half!

Using the give created by my cut line, I maneuvered the scissors slowly to cut out a circle large enough to accommodate my lamp's narrow stem.

With the bottle cut down one side, I was able to pull it apart just enough to get it around the stem of my lamp.
How to fit a Pom bottle onto a lamp
I then used clear tape to bring the cut sides together again. It doesn't look so nice now, but just wait...
Spray paint the lamp
Next, I taped the cord and socket off completely with painter's tape and painted the whole thing with white gloss spray paint.

But there was one problem. The gap between the top of the Pom bottle and the neck of the lamp was a bit unsightly.
Use a specialty hardware fitting to finish it
So I bought a "tip toe gasket." Whoever knows what that is gets bonus points. I basically just looked through the specialty plumbing fittings for a round rubber fitting that would cover that gap. This one fit the bill.
DIY Gourd Lamp
You can see the gasket here. It was black, so I spray painted it gold, cut a slit in one side, slipped it on and hot glued it into place.
Lamp before and after
Here's the before and after of my lamp. And yes, it does look shorter because I adjusted the height of it to accommodate the height of the Pom bottle.

Here are some more detailed instructions on the whole thing. And if you liked this post, check out how I turned a garage sale bottle into a stunning table lamp.
