21-Year-Old Table Gets a Facelift

A few months ago, I found a table set for sale. Thirty bucks. I couldn't pass up the offer. Structurally, she was in great shape...but in desparate need of a makeover. Her previous owner had served dinner on her every night for nearly 21 years! I could tell she was well-loved, and it was a bittersweet goodbye for her family. Here she is...
Getting right into it, I started sanding the table top and chair seats.
The wood looked beautiful. I have another table similar to this. The next time I do a table, I'd like to try a natural finish...but I knew what I had in mind for this old gal...
Here's the table after two coats of Annie Sloan Old White and two coats of General Finishes Java Gel. I laid it on a little thick up top...
Last year, our family grew by one🍼👶...so I went out in search of a couple more windsor chairs...with which I have a love-hate relationship. I love how you can mix and match your windsors and still make them look awesome as a set. However, I'm going to just say, this was the most tedious part of the project, as I used my paint brush for everything...
Finally, I was done with painting and staining. I sealed the paint with AS Soft Wax and finished the table top and chair seats with Polycrylic. I also got some GF Gel Topcoat and tried it on one of the chairs (I was a little nervous applying it to everything, as it was my first time trying that medium). All pieces turned out really well.
If I had this table to do over again, I would probably do a few things differently: 1. I might try a different sealant (nothing wrong with polycrylic at all! I just feel there are more fish in the sea). 2. I'd NOT choose white again for a kitchen table...luckily most of the dirt buffs right off...the rest of it just adds character 😉. 3. I'll invest in a sprayer before I decide to tackle half a dozen windsor chairs again.
I sent pictures to her old mom, who I kept in touch with throughout the process. She has open visitation rights and is always welcome to come have dinner with us on our "new" table! ❤️
