You can't go wrong with hostas and other shade loving plants strewn at their feet. Looks like you have a great start. It is a casual space so be casual with your planting pattern. Rows of plants may look too rigid for the area. Go to your local garden center and let them suggest plants that will thrive in your space. Congratulations on having such a blank canvas with which to work! -
I think splashes of color are needed. You can paint the plant pots, bring color through flowers, and other decor items. -
Looks like the perfect place for a wall fountain! -
There are also some hardy, low-water groundcovers that you could grow around and between those steps. I don't know what works well in your area, so again, you could ask at a local nursery. -
Under the deck you could use a mixture of hostas, ferns and hellebores. -
I agree, colorful pottery, maybe a cute statue, and more Hostas and possibly some Coral Belles. I agree with Alethea, rows would be too rigid, just go with a "plop drop" method and use different varieties of Hostas. There are blue, lemon yellow and white colored ones now, and different variegated leaves to contrast and all be different. It would be beautiful with the rocks. Also, maybe some moss on the stone step "risers" to hold the dirt in and decorate and give color. -
What a nice blank canvas you have here. I am a hosta addict , so am encouraging you to include many of them. Ijust got a little one Called lemonitis, Very yellow, but I have some pretty big ones too, you can see in my space, Don't forget to add some whimsy, some unexpected something to surprise us with. Something fun. -
For low maintenance, decorative grasses can make a big difference and impact. They come in many varieties of height and color. The good thing is they need almost no attention. A wall schulpture on that brick wall would be stunning...just make it colorful to spice up that brown on brown on brown look. A decorative trellis painted brilliant colors could be used as art. -
For an annual that will bring some color to a semi-shady spot and spill nicely over those lovely stone walls you have, take a look at torenia. -
What about adding a water feature to cascade down the rock walls? And then the plants around that. -

Thanks everyone. I bought several hostas today. Also have to work on keeping my lab out of the bed so I have laid down some chicken wire. Will post updated pictures soon. -
This may sound off the wall to you but I would definitely have the deck water proofed and put in a greenhouse under there. My brother in Mobile made his wife a beautiful greenhouse from against a bare wall. I would use the existing section there for storage, table, and places to sit and bask in the sun in winter without having to shift any plants inside ever again to ruin your floors and carpet regardless of how careful you are. I will look for his greenhouse and post it if I can find ...»
