My Latest Front Yard Project

I'm making a sort of "patio" in my front yard with a garden, it's still in the works, need to pull up the grass beside the driveway...it's a bugga boo to do that kind of work. I've planted some day lillies, canna lillies, etc in front of the patio. I'm still working on the patio, need 6 more tiles (bought out all the existing ones yesterday on Saturday from Lowes)...the tiles are made of recycled tire rubber, so I'm hoping they'll last atleast 5 years before they need to be replaced.

I don't know what is the cheapest kind of mulch to lay down around the plants though...any suggestions? I live in the south, so the biggest problem I can see is maybe increased mold and mildew in the mulch, or would that even happen?

Tiles from recycled tires. I like that idea much better than turning them into mulch. And speaking of which, your cheapest option would probably be pine straw. There's no downside to an organic mulch, as long as it is not directly touching your plants.

I live in the south also and I use chopped leaves from the trees in my yard. I do a different bed every year so now they all have chopped leaves...and they are free.

thank you, CG....I've recently this past fall and winter, tried mowing my grass, which had leaves ground up with it, and used it to cover my plants/garden areas....I'm hoping that the ground up grass and leaves will help protect the plants and to help add nutrients to the ground...
