5 Things I Should Have Considered Before Removing Popcorn Ceilings

We purchased an older home, a 1956 fixer upper. It is a solid built red brick ranch style house with 1970 popcorn ceilings. Almost two years into this project of fixing up our retirement home I reached the point I thought I was ready to do something about the ceilings.
Let me just start by saying, I should have thought more about it before starting. This post is all about the things they don't tell you about removing popcorn ceilings in those made to look easy videos. I'm revealing five things I wish I'd considered before starting such a project.
Midway into the project I realized scraping the popcorn was not only messy but could not be the only step in improving the ceiling. It looked like a kindergartner had done a bad finger painting and a mom had tried to clean it up.
That's when I stepped off the ladder and went back to searching the internet for "the rest of the story." It wasn't there. Not in a step by step process. That's why I wrote this post, with a bit of discovery humor.
Suggested materials:
  • Scraper   (I had one, you can get one at a hardware store.)
  • Dust mask   (hardware store)
  • Drop cloths   (hardware store)
