Mine has been in the ground for about 3 years, morning sun with afternoon shade hitting about 1pm.The first year I didn't get a bloom, second year one bloom, this year looks like about 5-7 blooms. It is at a down spout and gets a lot of water. I am guessing the one in the sun may not be blooming well due to water deprivation?
Douglas Hunt, I'm going to have to give you the title of THE PLANT EXPERT of "hometalk" as you know the answers to all the plant related questions. Thank you so very much for always being there for that!!!
Leida, I can assure you that I do not know all the answers. One of the many great things about gardening is that it is a constant learning experience, and I am learning new things all the time right here on Hometalk.
Douglas, YES!!! hometalk sure is an excellent tool to FRESH, RE-FRESH, and LEARN about (it seems) everything. I LOVE IT. I'm learning a whole lot from all of you here. By the way, GARDENING is one of my PASSIONS in life!!!
LOVE iris of any kind. These are great plants for our heavy clay soil here in Illinois. They want water but be careful of standing water for some varieties. My Siberian iris expand like crazy and are perfect for bedding plants with a strong sword leaf, nice seed pods and of course, beautiful purple flowers.
Dcz665 , I have one about the color of orange sherbert that I think I am going to move closer to the purple one in the picture, think it will be a good contrast?
hmmmm...my color schemes always start out as prescribed but then I start adding, dividing and next thing you know the "cool" are mixed with the "hot" and lazy Gardner that I am I convince myself that I like it. The purple recedes but the variegated leaves keeps it busy. The sherbert will pop a bit. Do they bloom at the same time? Maybe if you have something mellow close by to tie things together. Up here I'd plant lambs ear, artemisia or even a grey yarrow. I'd say go a head. It's an iris, you can always move it again!
Dcz665 lol good point! The only thing really near are some Gardenia 'Frost Proof', which are not blooming at the same time. As I recall I think last year I had about of week of the two in full bloom a the same time. ...eh think I will move it and just see! I will post a pic if it happens to come out beautiful :)
Those variegated Iris are one of my favorites too! They stand out at night time and I use them quite often in the garden around ponds and water features. The purple flowers are stunning. These are gorgeous photos and examples Four Season Nursery & Landscaping. They certainly make me think of spring. Still cold here in Rochester NY. I can't wait to start seeing them pop up!
I have a larger light purple iris that smells like grape juice.
