I have a barn that is made up of almost entirely old pallets. One of the prior owners worked at a produce warehouse...I think there are over 100 pallets that make up the interior walls, partitions and gates...and still many more on the ground...now I have some ideas for those spare ones.

ok, you all are just killing me with all of these wonderful ideas! I have pallets on the brain right now from looking at all of the ideas here. It's all I can think about these days lol. I will come out of this with some kind of creation.

Wonderful ideas now I'm worried that all these pallets that have just been laying around in the trash are going to disappear or they are going to start charging for them!!

I would hope if they start charging that it wouldn't be too much. I would like to think we're helping them out in a small way ;) I took a couple of nice pallets from behind Walmart and was hoping that no one would come outside tell me I couldn't have them.
Just be sure that you don't take any that are painted blue or red as these have to be returned by the company. They pay a deposit on them....$5 a pallet. That's what the price was a few years ago anyway. Those are really made well and solid.

We used palettes for the inside walls of my goat barn and stall doors, it was supposed to just be a temporary fix until I could get up the outside walls after I ran out of sheets of OSB. But it looks great and was free...I still need to rip down the OSB and do the rest of the walls with pallette boards. Much sturdier, lasts longer and looks like a wood lined horse stable. This wasn't our first attempt at using found items to build with. We built a 8 ft by 16 ft chicken coop with second ...»
hand lumber for framing, Covered it with slats from privacy fence that was discarded and used someone's discarded deck boards for the floor and the window was also a curb find. Only thing we bought was screws and shingles.

I asked my husband (works in shipping/receiving) if pallets are treated with chemicals - he said it is NOT allowed, they heat (NOT pressure) treat the wood for any pests. So rest assure you can use them to your hearts content. The only problem would be if something like greasy auto/machine parts were transported in/on them. (this is in MI, not sure about other states' regulations)
