Easy
I admit. I was drawn to the sleek and sexy look of the front-loading washing machines when they first came out. But but energy efficient, eco-friendly, sexy machine started to become a nightmare. My clothes started to smell like mold and mildew. After exhaustive research I found out what the problem was. And I came up with this solution how to clean it and prevent more problems.

If you had a small amount of white vinegar (I put it in the bleach space) not only will your machine smell better, your clothes will not have any lingering odors

Along with the above, some front loaders have a dirt screen. Mine has it at the front of the washer located near the floor. This grabs a lot of hair and other items, plus the water from the tubing which drains this area is quite dirty. It needs to be cleaned at least once a month or during a full day of washing. I no longer have the smell we talk about and changing detergent seemed to make a clean, all the time washer. Can't remember what I was using when it was new, but the smell has never come back and do not need to keep the door open.
