Staining your concrete patio to look like tile.

I was so pleased with the DIY project on our back patio! I stained the concrete to look like tile. We used painter's tape to create the look of grout lines, and we used a concrete stain from Lowe's to stain the concrete. For a step by step tutorial, just click on the link below.

GREAT look - a couple comments if you please - NEVER acid wash conc prior to acid staining ( the acid wash depletes the concrete's cement's ' free lime ' which is necessary for the mineral salt coloring in the acid stain. AFTER staining w/acid, it is necessary to neutralize the remnants of the stain. this is done by either 1handful of baking soda in a 2.5gal bucket of water OR straight ammonia diluted w/water ( 1 ammonia:8 water ) - then rinse thoroughly acid-stain is best applied by a ...»
pump can sprayer - we stain concrete wet OR dry depending on weather, humidity, flip-of-a-coin ( experience ). looks as if the sealer was water-based - solvent-based sealers are much harder & wear off much slower. however, you had GREAT results - tip of the hat to you. noted the tape measure - next time try a ' story pole ' - 1x2x10' magic markered in the increments you wish - MUST faster - AGAIN, CONGRATS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went and looked at the website. This is a non-reactive water based concrete stain. A couple of concerns... one. They used muriatic acid which is not recommended for use by do-it-yerselfers. The reason... neutralizing the material was never mentioned. They said they applied and let dry. This creates a ticking time bomb until failure. Unless PROPERLY neutralized, the floor is too acidic and will start coming apart. Secondly, a garden pump sprayer is the way to apply these materials, ...»
NOT via roller. You will get roller marks. (as they did). They also recommend their primer in advance of these materials. I did not see any priming of the surface. Future issues? Most likely...

Now I am almost sorry that I carpeted our basement. The faux tile looks lovely and must be so easy to keep clean. I love it.
