Easy Country-style Kitchen Decor

Easy kitchen decor with minimal sewing and all around craftiness....mostly because I am lazy and like instant gratification. ;)
I have a bad habit of picking up things at swap meets, just because I "might" need them someday. So, when I found old coffee bean sacks for a steal, I grabbed about 10 for "someday".
I recently painted my kitchen and in the process of looking for ways to decorate, decided to try my hand at making window coverings out of the coffee sacks.
I started with cutting open the coffee sack as it was not long enough to cover the window while still in it's current form. I cut the edges where it was sewn together to make one big piece.

I recommend doing this outside because what I thought was an empty sack, still had some coffee beans inside which ended up all over my floor.

Next, I tried to briefly iron the coffee sack to give me a sorta flat surface in which to work. I didn't like the look of the sack alone which is where the muslin came in. I laid the muslin on the "wrong side" of the coffee sack and cut it to the same size and shape. I sewed the sack and the muslin together with a simple stitch, leaving the raw edges on the sides of the curtain, but folding the bottom up about an inch and resewing.

I folded the top down a couple of inches and sewed again to make the pocket for hanging the curtain. Then, I took pinking shears and went around the entire thing just to clean up the loose strings.

We hung the curtain on the rod and I found a ribbon that I liked in which I cut to a length that I felt I could work with and then tied in bows. I had to do this a couple of times until I got a height that I felt comfortable with. The nice thing about this is that you can do it over and over until you like what you see.
Now, about the pictures on both sides... Have I mentioned that I'm also lazy about decorating? So here's the deal, I am also very fickle, which means I like to change my mind. Alot.

Because of this, I find that I don't like to spend a lot of money on decor items because I might not feel the same next month. The frames around the window are 8 x 8 frames I purchased from the local dollar store. My craft hoarding tendencies and frugalness paid off in that I have a TON of scrapbook paper from which I could choose. I chose some black and red paper and cut it to fit the mat in the frame. Glued it right to the mat.
Then, I went on Pinterest and found free kitchen printables (there are a TON in many colors) and printed them out on white cardstock. Cut the cardstock to a size that I was comfortable with (6 x 6 seemed to work well) and centered it on the scrapbook paper covered mat, using foamy tab stickers (also from the dollar store) to make it pop out a little.
Voila! Put the frame back together and then had my husband hang them (he likes to measure, I - do not.)

For me, it was an easy afternoon project. I hope yours brings you as much fun as I had doing mine.
