What is wrong with gravel? For non-traditional see if you can find shredded tires. Find out what is being recycled in your area.

My buddy over here in Japan used permeable pavers to create a driveway with a grass middle. I did a Google search and found a picture similar to it.

Gravel has been mentioned but I specifically suggest pea gravel over a firm base.
