Drawers in the Steps

Storage in a small, century home is scarce. So, we are making the most of our space by adding storage drawers in the steps. The project didn't really cost us anything except the cost of the carpet on top of the steps. We dismantled an old changing table/dresser and repurposed the drawers and drawer glides. We attached the drawer glides to the risers and then added the steps on top. You can check out the entire tutorial and more home improvements at:

Clever idea, and I could use more storage space....but my only concern with doing this would be code for what an inspector may view as an "open riser" space if you sell your home. With the drawers removed, the code for a 4" open riser space may come into play. It's a child safety thing. Basically if a 4" sphere can pass through the opening and a child can crawl/fall through, it won't pass code. I don't know what's behind the stairs, but if it's open space, this may be one of those ...»
things that works great for you, but you may have to be prepared to put in closed risers (or nail them shut) if you go to sell your home. I would love this in my house, though!

Pray to god that EVERYONE CLOSES THE DRAWERS WHEN THEY ARE DONE!!! That could break someones back.. Think I would be more at ease if the drawers pulled out at the side.

I love these hidden spaces put to good use. Drawers are great if sturdy, but yes, keeping them closed and avoiding accidents is important. My dad put shelves UNDER the stairs (on the back side) to store things, both within a closet under the stairs and if the main house stairs going up run above cellarway stairs going down, we could go to cellarway and use shelves under main stairs going up.

Great idea. Very clever. This would be great in a condo townhouse. Condos have such limited space. You need to be creative when looking for places to store things.
