Making a Trumeau Mirror from an Old Door

I found this old door at a thrift store, and thought it might make a great mirror.

I found this old door for $2.50 at a thrift store. I turned it upside down and made the bottom the top.

I used citrus paint remover to strip the paint. Then I sanded it well.

I added some trim and some appliques. Construction adhesive kept most of it in place, clamps and tape kept the trim from moving around. I also had to...

Then I painted the frame. I used left over latex house paint in gray, with a white wash on top.

The whole project cost about $65, including the door. I used a lot of scraps of trim and moulding we already had.

Gee whiz - what magic you performed to transform this from the "sows ear into a silk purse!!! That is just totally over the top!! I also had no idea there was a product out there which could make glass look like a mirror,

A couple of questions just for clarification - you used 5 CANS not 5 coats on the glass??

And what does the term "Trumeau Mirror" mean? I'm just not familiar w/that word!!

You did a great job on this! The moulding and color work so very well with the room you put it into. I know how much fun, and what a challenge, moulding is to work with, since I built a frame for one of my mirrors too.

Hi, Susan. I did use 5 cans. They're not large cans, and it was a large surface to cover. Each coat goes on very light, or else you get some bad drips., and it takes awhile before it really looks like a mirror.

"Trumeau" is just the style of the mirror~with the larger top on the frame and some carvings or other decorative details.

Looks fantastic! I've been wanting to build a trumeau mirror but didn't think of using a door. Many trumeau's have a painted scene at the top, usually a pastoral of some kind. I want to mimic that look using decoupage since I'm no artist. Thanks for the tips on the mirror paint. I just got a can to experiment with using it to make faux Mercury glass.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

absolutely beautiful and glad to find out about the "mirrored" paint. I'm a firm believer in JB Weld and spray paint. Fixes everything like new again.
