Coffee cans are great for an inexpensive irrigation system for the garden, too. Put them in the ground, near the roots of your veggies you've planted, being sure that the dirt is out of the can. Fill the cans with water when you are watering. The roots get plenty of water that way; little is wasted and the plant is very happy! Water at nighttime, and you'll see that the earth is still moist in the morning. Plants thrive!
@ Mary - if a container is "food safe" then it certainly shouldn't harm plants. I have planted things in both metal & plastic containers and nothing suffered any ill effects. I think the biggest issue might be if the metal cans are sitting in full sun they might get too hot and could maybe inadvertently "cook" your plants so a little shade in the middle of the day and you ought to be fine!!!
It's the only coffee I drink - found at Walmart and a lot cheaper than the other brands - I have tons of these cans downstairs (always thought they looked useful) Now I know what to do with them!
I saved the large cans that tomatoes come in. I plant herbs in them and give them as gifts. I arrange 3 or 4 of them in a basket or on a tray with an appropriate kind of bread, pasta, and a bottle of wine. Most people love it.
I HAVE 2 WHITE CATS WHO BECOME GREY WHENEVER THEY GO OUTSIDE! THEY ROLL IN THE DIRT & BRING IT IN MY HOUSE--I WONDER WHERE THEY FIND IT!! NEVER SEEM TO HURT PLANTS THO. HAD A VISITING CAT WHO DID LOTS OF DAMAGE,, BUT NOT MINE, SMARTER, I GUESS!
I love this! We have gotten into such a "matchie, matchie" world that people stopped having fun. If you run out of planters, you can use anything...no need to stop gardening. I have colored bottles and old bottles sitting in my kitchen window for vases! Recently I washed a square olive oil bottle to use as a vase! I was careful not to get the colorful label wet so it would be in tact! Looks fantastic!
These are seasonal flowers and therefore temporary. The cans will rust, I do not think that this will harm the plant since it is not a food plant. Because the can will rust, I would not trust it to cook in. I too found this brand of coffee at Walmart at a great savings.
I don't think it would harm anything to have herbs planted in cans either. Rust will add iron to the soil so some plants might not like the iron but I doubt it would have much effect overall.
Oh Lee Anne - I loved your answer to Bob!! That was hilarious and even though I've never heard your voice, I did hear that!! IT WAS CLASSIC - loved it!!!
