Ideas, what to do about floor?

We purchased this home which was built in 1993. It's throughout downstairs, and I'm certainly not a fan of it. Keep in mind...My husband recently retired from the Air Force after 20 years, so we're looking at ideas within a reasonable cost. (-:

I assume you like the tiles and just want a different grout color? If so, deep clean the grout and re-grout it in another color. Make sure to seal the new grout.

What is your question? Do you want to hide this tile? Install some other flooring and can't figure out what or how? Etc.. Post exchange sometimes stocks affordable flooring options.(I'd practically kill to have this easy to clean tile instead of the white vinyl that came with my house).

The tiles are great. It's the grout that takes away from their beauty. A cheap alternative would be to paint the grout. I would go with white grout paint to blend the tiles as one unit. Check out the very popular laminate flooring available at most stores like Home Depot or Lowes. There is a large selection of wood look types as well as others. It is not glued down and can easily be a DIY project.

If you're trying to cover up and water could be an issue, we put down vinyl plank flooring (bathrooms) we purchased from Home Depot and are quite happy. It "floats" over existing floors. No glueing. Clicks together similarly to laminate, but much friendlier to an accidental flood from bathroom pipes or overflowing dishwasher...

Angela, not knowing for sure what the rest of the rooms have or colors I would recommend a wood laminate, I prefer a mix of light to med. throughout the one level for an even balance. Home Depot or Lowe's are two good companies to get materials from. If you can get an independent contractor to do the labor or even better if you and your husband can do some of the labor to help. The tile has to come up.

IS it that you don't like the look of the tile? OR is it that you con't like the feel? Surprisingly, tile has been the best thing I have ever put in one of my homes. It cleans so beautifully with sweeping and using window cleaner, followed by putting a towel on the floor and swiping it dry with my feet. It never looks "dirty" even after 18 years of constant use. Your tile look gorgeous. Do you know if they are ceramic or porcelain? . Although presently the "faddish" thing is larger tiles, these are classic. I agree with the above who advocate changing the grouting. If it's "comfort" factor you're looking for, try some inexpensive (and well padded) rugs that complement your decor. E.G., in my home I use Persian look. But in other places, an abstract design would work.

Paint the grout off white to match the tile for now. Will cost under $50, a weekend and use a good small fine pointed or flat artists brush and seal just the grout with a varathane, it will water proof the grout for very easy cleaning. You can live with that for a while. It will change the entire look for the rooms and give you time to consider flooring options down the road. I love tile with scattered rugs. So easy to maintain.

We bought a house with white tile with gray grout in the bathroom. I used grout colorant in bright white. Very easy and and I love the crisp clean look. Bought it at Menard's, but almost any home improvement store will have it.

White grout paint will improve this immensely. Other options are DIY floating floors. I have a very ugly faux terracotta and I am looking at stencilling on it. You could try this too. Try a 'door mat' sized trial patch in a heavy use area. Sponge with cream and grey paint for a marble look and then seal twice with a good poly urethane. This is what I plan to do. If this doesn't take the wear, I will remove it with solvents.

If it's the tiles that you don't like, paint the entire floor. I had some ugly dark green tile in my foyer and I painted it and sealed it and it looks beautiful. You can find the techniques on the internet.

Are you certain that grout is dark and not just stained? (I have had 2 houses where this was the awful truth...)
