What a treat. Mine have been going awhile now (one of the advantages of living in Florida). It's marvelous to walk by and breathe deep of that wonderful fragrance.
I was going through treatment much like chemo when this was blooming and when it finally opened I brought it in the house. Not a good idea. The fragrance was so strong that I thought I was going to be ill so I ended up putting it in the mud room to perk it up,
Their fragrance is really nice in small doses. heheh
This bloom came off of the Magnolia tree that was planted by my Grandmother in 1918, when her brothers built the house that I now live in. As a child I would drag a pillow and a book up through the limbs of this beautiful old tree and sit there for hours (this was in the 50's) Sitting in the comfort of the tree, I could read, watch over the land for miles feeling like I was at the top of the world. "Maggie" all of the time. She makes a mess all year, but I would never have her removed willingly.
Jan, that is so sad. I can't imagine going thru what you have had to. I always bring magnolias inside. I love the smell...as you know smell is one of the strongest senses and the smell of magnolia is such a comfort to me.
Our home is a two story, I was not quite that brave LOL, the only whipping I ever rec'd from my grandma was when I crawled out of the 2nd story bedroom window into the magnolia rather than climbing all the way up the tree.
